Eve’s Drink Picks – The Perfect Sip for Every Situation
Egads. The powers that be, namely my esteemed editor and associate publisher, have asked for a list describing my favorite drinks for different situations. When life hands you moments, here’s how to pair them with alcohol.
Girls Night Drink
Splitting a bottle of wine with said girlfriend (one of mine is always referred to as Double E in social media, you know, to protect the innocent) is usually the standard choice accompanied by lots of nibbles at one of our local wine bars.
I’m not one to recommend a little “hair of the dog” as a hangover cure. Instead, lots of water, saltine crackers and exercise usually busts the booze out of any system. For me, if I know I’ve overdone it, a Pepcid before bed helps me out 100 percent.
Dive Bar Drink
Well. This is bound to happen to us all. We need a drink, darts and a pool table, and then we find ourselves limited to ordering a beer, whiskey or wine. Skip the wine as who knows how long that open and unrefrigerated bottle has sat on the back bar. Skip the beer from the tap and get it in the bottle. Or stay safe and just order the whiskey.
By the Pool Cocktail
Something that would work in a coconut shell – like a thick Pina Colada or a Mai Tai – with lots of pineapple wedges. Eve Warning 101: I texted a few pals one year, from a raft in my pool while sipping something frothy, and I don’t think they ever got over that image!
Classy Drunk Drink
The classy drunk? Hmmm … that sounds like an oxymoron to me, but I’ll play along. Just try anything you have less of a chance of spilling. Drinking from a bedazzled flask also comes to mind.
A favorite for those who can tolerate coffee at night is just adding a splash of liqueur to that cup of joe: hazelnut, chocolate or cream flavored. For those who aren’t partial to evening caffeine, try a warm beverage like brandy or a Hot Toddy.
After a Long Day Drink
My husband usually reaches for an “angry” single malt scotch, one that is extra peaty like Lagavulin or Laphroaig. This requires slow sipping until our long day is a memory, and our night has officially been kicked off.
Hanging Out With the Guys Drink
Any brown spirit, on the rocks or in a cocktail. But for my female readers – unless you weigh the same as your male counterparts – please do not attempt to keep up with them! Just sip and smile!
Vacation Kick-Off Drink
Anything with an umbrella! Also the Italian Aperol Spritz will remind you of your last, next or first trip to Italy, and who doesn’t find Venice or Rome on their vacation check-off list?
Acceptable Business Meeting Drink
Stick to white wine, as it’s much lower in alcohol than a cocktail and not a problem if you happen to splash your clothing while getting that dream job offer.
