How to become an Influencer Part 3
Part 3: Post content that engages the masses by Claudia Sheridan Building influence and rising above the noise is not an easy task. I’m not going to lie to you: It takes work and plenty of it. The question is: Are you willing to put in the work? If you are, then you want to continue reading because I’m going to share with you three ways you can gain followers and gain influence on social media.
I had an interesting conversation with a Facebook representative on the topic of influence. While discussing targeted Facebook ads, I asked what Facebook considers influence. Although he worked for Facebook, I certainly wasn’t expecting him to speak on behalf of Mark Zuckerberg. However, I wanted insight on how I can strengthen a Facebook marketing strategy for a client. Curious as to what his response was? He explained that influence isn’t determined by the number of Likes a Facebook Page has; it is determined by the amount of engagement a Facebook Page has. What does that mean?
If you want to become influential on social media, then you need to find a way for people to engage with you. Engagement, on any social media platform, refers to the level of interaction a user has with your posts. This is very different from the number of Likes or Followers a Page has because Page followers don’t always interact with the Page’s content. And if people aren’t interacting with you, chances are you are of little influence to them.
Want to know the secret of becoming a social media influencer? Consistently post content that resonates with and engages an audience.
These last couple of months we’ve discussed harnessing your passion and sharing it with the world, as well as connecting with others who share your passion. Now, here are three things you can do to increase engagement and become an influencer by consistently posting content that resonates with an engaging audience.
1. Be interesting.
You are interesting, so be interesting. Find that one thing you’re passionate about, and share it with others. Share all of it – the parts you love and the parts you don’t. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe once said, “I don’t want to be interesting. I want to be good.” And sure, we all want to be good at what we do, but on social media, the only way to become good at being an influencer is to be interesting. People remember interesting. People are intrigued by interesting. People follow interesting. How can you turn your passion into something interesting to others?
2. Build your brand.
Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, said: “Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.” Every post you make should reflect who you are and what your brand means. For example, when crafting your posts, think about why you want to share this information with others. If it doesn’t contribute to your passion and reflect who you are, then rewrite the post so it represents the image or feeling you want to project.
3. Be consistent.
Becoming an influencer is no easy task; it takes work and lots of it. Make time to work on your social media presence. Create an editorial calendar, and begin planning your social media posts, from the number of posts you’ll be making a day to the actual posts themselves. By posting regularly, you are reminding your audience who you are and what you do – you are staying top of mind. Finally, remember, if you’re passionate about something, share your passion through social media. You never know who will be learning from your journey.
