Prayer Angels for the Military All About Supporting Santa Clarita Troops

by | Sep 25, 2017 | Spotlight

Recognized by the city of Santa Clarita and Los Angeles county, the Newhall based Prayer Angels for the Military has led community efforts in supporting local troops for 14 years. With hearts of gold, this amazing team of all ages, has worked side by side, supporting our local deployed troops with thousands of care packages and a ton of love from their own home town. They are supported on a regular basis and throughout their deployments, with extra special packages for the holidays and on their birthdays.
Deployed troops without families are always adopted and supported, as well, thanks to information received from local troops and contacts with the overseas chaplains. They are all in the hearts and prayers of our community members, and will continue getting this support until they all come home. A laminated Prayer of Protection /Psalm 91 card goes out with every package.
Prayer Angels for the Military, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit, staffed by volunteers and funded by private donations. The Prayer Angel Team includes military families, veterans, businesses, schools, youth groups, churches and community members of all ages. Some of the team members share a very special bond, including the Blue Star Families, with loved ones currently on active duty and the Gold Star Families that have lost a loved one in service to our country. The SCV Young Marines have also proudly worked closely with the Prayer Angels for many years.
Suzon Gerstel, President and co-founder of the organization, explained that their group began as a handful of women, supporting their children and husbands with the first deployment to Iraq in 2003. Almost immediately, their deployed family members gave them the names of other service members who also needed their prayers and support. After that, the list just kept growing. Their group of supporters grew, too, and Prayer Angels for the Military was officially founded July 14, 2004. In the beginning, to meet the needs of the high deployment levels, the Angels organized care packing events for many thousands of troops, using U-Haul trucks and gymnasiums. With needs being met and less deployments, they can now focus on local troops.
Santa Clarita businesses and community members are being asked to help support the hometown troops.  They still need our support! Donations are low and holidays are coming.  Donated items to go in the care packages are collected all year, with big efforts made for the holidays. Funds for shipping, at $17.35 per box, are always needed and donations are tax-deductible. There is a 24/7 donation bin at: Prayer Angels for the Military, 21609 Oak Orchard Rd, Newhall, CA 91321. Donations can also be mailed here, or donate online at www.prayerangelsforthemilitary.com. Donated items, gift cards and funds can also be designated towards special needs packages for wounded warriors, hospitalized veterans, homeless veterans, and military families facing extreme hardships.
Donate A Car Program is available year-round, along with Donate A Book drive (large print books & audio books for wounded warriors and hospitalized veterans), Warm Thank You winter drive for handmade scarves, hats, blankets & quilts, and an ongoing Operation Cup A Joe specialty coffee drive. There’s an annual Valentine’s Day Hearts for Heroes event, Easter’s Operation Forget Me Not event, Armed Forces Day Packing, Independence Day Packing, 4th of July Military Parade Float, Patriots Day Packing, 9/11 Remembrance, Halloween Treats for Troops, Operation Thank Our Troops for the holidays, Thanksgiving Gift Baskets & Meals, Holiday Gift Baskets & Meals and the annual Military Honor Christmas Tree Lighting at Veterans Plaza.
