A Message from the Associate Publisher Alexander Hafizi – Oct/Nov 2017
As I sit here and write to you all, I cannot even believe this is our October/November issue. Summer is ending and we are officially coming into the holiday season. It seems like just yesterday we were saying summer is coming!
In this issue we have some pretty exciting editorials. First off, our cover story features the new Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Captain Robert Lewis. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few weeks ago and he has great plans for our town. His extensive background in law enforcement and his very personable attitude assures us he will make a great Captain. See page 8.
Our cutest story has to be our Dynamic Duo. Twins, Dashiell and Fox Messitt, are the newest addition to the Netflix show Fuller House, a sequel to the 1987-95 TV show and our old time favorite, Full House. See page 10.
In this issue, we announce our Ultimate Home & Garden winners. I would like to congratulate all who won and thank all of our supporters for voting for your favorites and seeing us through another amazing issue. Starting on page 12 you will see our elite Ultimate Winners.
When I think of Fall, I think of the change in color of the foliage and decorating my home with beautiful colors of amber, deep reds, and subtle greens. Fall is the perfect time to update your home. In our Home & Garden Transformed section take a look at how some of our clients used their magic to make a great space even more special. See page 32.
October is Breast Cancer awareness month, we thought it would be appropriate to feature Dr. Dortha Chu, from City of Hope, a doctor that is making some waves in the fight against cancer. Because of my personal involvement with Circle of Hope, our interview with Wendy Thrush, a breast cancer survivor, is near and dear to my heart. Wendy has been battling cancer for many years, she has such an amazing story, you can read about her on page 54. In our Fabulous Finds shopping guide you will find some Breast Cancer Awareness items, among many other items, for the family to enjoy this season.
We have also featured two doctors from Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, Dr. Greg Senofsky and Dr. Rashida Soni, both have made great strides in helping patients through the difficult times that come with the diagnosis of cancer. We are also pleased to feature Terry Lynn Bucknall, Director of Women’s Imaging at the Sheila Veloz Breast Center. Terry has a great story and has been involved with the center since its inception.
As you may know, non-profits have a big place in our hearts so in this issue we want you to learn more about the Family Promise page 56, LARC Ranch page 57, Prayer Angels for the Military page 58, Valley Industry Association page 64 and the American Heart Association page 65. All of these non-profits are doing extraordinary things in our valley, if you have the time to get out there to volunteer and help out please do. I strongly believe it’s good for our soul to help others.
In August my partner and I took a trip down Highway One, and enjoyed the scenic Discovery Route. If you are looking for a quick getaway, I would highly recommend it, see our review on page 70.
Lastly, read about the raw talent of some of the Santa Clarita Valley’s best chefs and/or owners in our dining section starting on page 74.
It is my greatest honor, to put yet another successful magazine to print for our community and I look forward to our next project. A quick shout out to Lindsay Schlick of SchlickArt for the phenomenal new headshot above.
Take care for now!
