A Message from the Associate Publisher Alexander Hafizi – June/July 2018
Can you believe summer is here? It’s one of my favorite seasons of the year. The weather is warmer, the urge to go to the beach is strong and all I want to do is have a barbecue with family and friends. While you are gearing up for your summer activities, I hope you are looking for some interesting stories to read because in this issue we have some really great ones.
First, can I talk about what an epic cover we have this month? A real-life rock legend—none other than guitarist to the gods, Zakk Wylde. Zakk is a musician, actor, and long-time guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, as well as founder of the heavy metal band Black Label Society. We had the opportunity to speak with him about the Black Label Society’s new record Grimmest Hits. Check out page 8 for the Q & A.
Right in time for summer, we are proud to present the 8th annual Ultimate Beauty & Fitness Awards. Each year we highlight the best of the best, and this year is no exception! Turn to page 12 to see the Ultimate winners. And it doesn’t stop there, we took it to the next level by featuring Before and After Transformations from the experts themselves. Find just the right professional for you in the pages of élite Magazine.
Our summer theme continues with our Fabulous Finds. Compiled by our advertisers and some great products we are able to review, we hope you find some great finds on page 32.
Speaking of fabulous finds, our Million Dollar Home highlights a spectacular home that just also happens to be for sale. Visit page 72 for the six-page layout. And if you are looking for a new place to call home, we are proud to feature our élite Home Showcase. Highlighting the inventory of Santa Clarita realtors this page features current listings for top Realtors.
Our town has so much young talent it is unbelievable. I love being able to share these stories with you all. Mackenzie Patten, who was a contestant on MasterChef Junior with Gordon Ramsay, is only 11 years-old. If you saw the show, you would have been amazed. We also have 14-year-old film creator, Griffin Loch as well as 14-year-old singer, songwriter and actress Sara Rowe.
You’ll also find a dynamic story on local stunt woman Kara Peterson. Kara was the stunt double for Drew Barrymore in their second season of filming Santa Clarita Diet, you can read about Kara’s career on page 28.
This next gentleman is an individual I am extremely excited to feature in this issue. Daniel Morris a young man who is an accomplished musician, playing his Viola at different locations around town. Born out of a pure love of playing, you can read more about Daniel on page 30.
One of our spotlights this month is a non-profit called Yes I Can Unity through Music and Education. This organization teaches challenged teens and adults the skills needed for a career in the music and the entertainment industry.
In this issue, we’ve also featured actress Stacy Sutphen and local director Mark Gould as well as Barrie Eget, an epic sports announcer. As I said, we have so many talented people in Santa Clarita and it is our pleasure to feature them in the pages of the June/July issue.
This issue also brings something new for the pages of élite Magazine. A reoccurring feature entitled: Our First Responders will kick off. In our first feature, we are pleased to share a Q&A with Assistant Fire Chief Anderson Mackey. Let’s meet the man behind the uniform.
Enjoy our regular columnists, Eve Bushman, our wine expert; Claudia Sheridan, our social media expert; and Holly Schroeder, our economic development expert. And we welcome new columnist Nadine Young to élite. Nadine included a killer snack to keep us going on a healthy and happy lifestyle. Want to know more about filming in the SCV, turn to SCV Reel Talk on page 46 and you’ll find out about arts and entertainment with the Santa Clarita Arts Commission on page 54 and of course, we never forget to cover our very own four-star hospital in the SCV, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital on page 40.
Our calendar of events features so many things to do in Santa Clarita so be sure to mark the calendar, so you can get out there and have some fun. If you are looking for a short trip out of Santa Clarita, we’ve got you covered with our Great Escape to Kona Kai Resort & Spa on page 56.
Our Looking Back feature shares the story of Sean and Zizi Pieterse, a fantastic acrobatic duo who have traveled the world together before calling Santa Clarita their home. Read their story on page 84.
Don’t forget to vote for your favorite home and garden businesses in our 8th Annual Home and Garden awards. Voting for these awards is now open. Just go to www.scvelitemagazine.com/ultimate-awards. You have the next two months to vote and nominate your favorite professional.
That being said, I hope you all have a wonderful summer.
Until next time,
