8 Ways to Optimize Your Instagram Account

by | Sep 24, 2018 | #BeSocial

Sunny days mean more adventures, vacations, and photo opportunities which makes this the perfect time to optimize your Instagram profile!  With over 500 million active daily users and over 25 million active businesses using Instagram Business accounts, it’s a crucial time to include Instagram as part of your marketing strategy.  To unlock Instagram’s potential, however, it’s essential to create an Instagram profile that successfully captures the attention of the people you’d most like to attract. And, it all starts with you optimizing your Instagram profile.

1. Optimize Your Profile Username
Your name on Instagram should match that of your brand or business.  If you’re new to Instagram, this may prove a challenge as a lot of names have already been taken. If your name is not available, consider using words like, “the,” “original,” “real,” or “first” to help differentiate you from others with a similar name. Remember to make this easy to remember.

2. Optimize Your Profile Picture
Your profile picture should be recognizable and easy to see.  Avoid using photos with too many distractions, such as a landscape or group photo because those details are easily lost since the viewing area is pretty small. Instagram crops your profile photo into a circle, so opt for a picture that is on-brand with your business and social profiles and is easily recognizable.

3. Optimize Your Bio
With a maximum of 150 characters in the bio section of your Instagram profile, it’s imperative that you make the most of it.  People won’t spend the time to read the caption of every single post, so use this space to give visitors an idea of who you are or what your business is about.  Don’t be afraid to let your personality show a bit as well.

4. Don’t Forget About the Link
Entering a URL in the file provided when editing your profile is essential.  Links are not currently clickable in posts and are limited in Instagram stories; therefore the link in your Bio is the only one you can count on to always be functional.  Whereas you may be tempted to make this a default value, such as your company website, consider using this link to promote whatever campaign you want to promote at the time.  Remember, this field can be as fluid as you’d like for it to be, so don’t be afraid to change it to direct visitors to a specific web page or promotion. Short links are best. If your link is too long, consider using a free link shortening service such as bit.ly or tiny.url.

5. Make Your Profile Public
If you’re utilizing social media to promote your business, then it only makes sense to set your privacy settings to public.  Think about it, if your goal is to market your business, then you want people to be able to find you and view your content, don’t you?

6. Switch To A Business Profile
Unlike personal accounts, business accounts provide you with analytics and promotional tools. For example, you’re able to track post performance and follower growth. This data is beneficial when evaluating what’s working and what’s not.  Additionally, with a business account, you can specify location, hours and contact information.

7. Share Your Stories
You may think that Instagram Stories are only for personal profiles, think again.  Stories offer a great way to showcase behind-the-scenes content and keep you at the top of the Instagram newsfeed.  Stories live for 24 hours, so it’s often more engaging than a post or even a video.  You can also set Instagram to save your stories to the Camera Roll on your phone, giving you content to use at a later date.

8. Turn On Notifications
I know what you’re thinking, but hear me out.  People do business with people they know, like and trust, right?  So why do most small business owners scoff at the opportunity to engage with their followers?  Engagement fosters relationships and relationships lead to trust.  Make sure that you, or your team, are in the position to respond to comments in a timely fashion.
