Vital Roles of Wedding Planners
So you said yes to one of the biggest questions of your life…” Will you marry me?” You finally found the one, your soulmate and are in wedded bliss. Now, you and your significant other are about to embark on one of the most wondrous, incredible, fulfilling ventures in your lifetime… planning your big day. For many couples this is also a very stressful time because there is so much that must be done. Between actually enjoying the engagement and getting it all done and correct before/during the big day is like an epic battle waged between gladiators where they both knock each other out at the end and that is when you say “I, do”. One thing that a couple can utilize in their arsenal to completely alleviate that stress is a wedding planner. We sat down with élite Magazine’s Ultimate Wedding Planner and 2019 Wedding Wire Couple’s Choice Award winner Laura Lynn Seguin, who for many years has made sure that the “Big Day” goes as planned. She has offered her insight on why a wedding planner is a crucial part in this entire process.
From the florist not showing up on time to keeping track of the groom’s alcohol intake, Laura Lynn has been through it all. No matter what the situation Laura strongly believes “You should not deliver bad news unless it’s absolutely necessary. “As a wedding coordinator you don’t deliver bad news when it’s just bad news, you deliver bad news with a resolution to the problem.” What this does for the bride and groom is alleviate the worry or feeling of impending doom because it ensures them that the issue is already getting fixed. “Through these situations, I not only learned how important it is to have a wedding coordinator, but how important it is to pay for ideal vendors, because you know you are paying for amazing customer service.”
Your wedding day should be enjoyed and not spent worrying about whether everything is going as planned. By enlisting the expertise of a wedding planner they do most of the worrying for you. “The day of the wedding, [the bride and groom] don’t have time to be running around making sure people are arriving and worrying about the florist or the caterers.” For instance, if the wedding and reception are in separate places Laura will assign members of her team to each location to help with the setup and execution.
The actual hiring of a wedding planner is a process in itself. From the “courting stage”, where couples are vetting the different coordinators, to the actual day a good wedding planner gets to truly know their client and their wishes. “I do not believe in pressuring my potential clients. I like to start a dialogue with them, build a relationship and allow my reviews and word of mouth to speak for me…. when they do hire me, we begin the process of getting to know each other even more. It’s very important for couples to make sure they like and get along well with their coordinator in order to make sure everything runs smoothly.” After this step comes the “Welcome Meeting” where the planner and coordinator go over the Wedding Action Plan and puts all the ideas into a detailed document. Then comes the budget. “A lot of people do not realize their budget can inflate fast if they are not careful”. Laura offers helpful online folders and documents that breakdown the different costs based on specific budgets. Some planners, like Laura, offer service hours that include negotiating with vendors even having vendors that they regularly work with to give the bests discounts and offers. “For me, depending on the service package the client chooses, I’ll attend vendor interviews with or on behalf of my clients to give recommendations or help with negotiations. I also come from a catering background so I have a lot of experience and connections with restaurants and food services throughout Los Angeles”.
Laura recently began offering engagement, rehearsal dinner and honeymoon services to complete her practice as a one stop shop for all your wedding needs.
