Leading Men In Film

Many of the most iconic scenes from some of your favorite TV shows were filmed right here in Santa Clarita. Keeping with the theme of élite Magazine’s Men in Business issue, let’s look at the numerous productions which filmed in our City, that feature some hard-working guys.
Mad Men, the popular AMC series set in the 1960’s world of Madison Avenue advertising, was a very literal example of the theme. The show flirted with many of the era’s stereotypical behaviors of male and female dynamics in the workplace. Whether Mad Men would be as warmly welcomed today as it was when it was a hit, scenes were filmed on-location in Santa Clarita at Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch.
The TNT show Franklin and Bash spanned four seasons from 2011 to 2014, and was also based in Santa Clarita. Men in Business is also a theme of this show where Jared Franklin (Brecklin Meyer) and Peter Bash (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) are streetwise lawyers who, after winning a big trial, get recruited by a law firm to take on new cases. The popular show filmed all over Santa Clarita, including the Westfield Valencia Town Center, Hyatt Regency Valencia, Valencia Lanes, College of the Canyons, the Industrial Center and several residential neighborhoods.
Of course, Men in Business easily applies to one of television’s most endearing comedies: The Office. Having quite a bit of filming history in Santa Clarita, The Office filmed locally as early as 2006, and continued to revisit our City, last filming in 2012. In season four, the episode titled “Job Fair,” Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) tries to land a big client by taking him golfing; those notable scenes were filmed at the Vista Valencia Golf Course. The Office filmed baseball scenes at College of the Canyons for the episode titled “The Chump.” Additionally, the episodes “Tallahassee” and “After Hours” were filmed at the Hyatt Regency Valencia.
Arrested Development is the story of Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), a widower with a teenage son, trying to keep his dysfunctional family together after his father is arrested for a white-collar crime involving the family-owned business. With the family assets frozen, Michael must take control of the company, while dealing with his entitled and extravagant family. Arrested Development originally aired on Fox in 2003, but was cancelled in 2006. However, the show found new life on Netflix in 2013 with season four and in 2018 with season five. Many scenes were filmed on-location in Santa Clarita including the Santa Clarita Athletic Club, College of the Canyons, Blue Cloud Movie Ranch, the Hyatt Regency Valencia, Bridgeport Market Place and several area streets and homes.
Santa Clarita has many recognizable Realtor teams, but Joel Hammond (Timothy Olyphant) in Santa Clarita Diet is one half of perhaps the most famous. He is the most unique Man in Business, since he has the challenge of balancing a successful real estate career, while struggling to rein-in real estate partner and undead wife, Sheila Hammond (Drew Barrymore). Being true to its name, Santa Clarita Diet, the horror-comedy hit on Netflix, was not only based at sound stages in Santa Clarita, but also filmed on location for several scenes. Fans will recognize the Santa Clarita Skate Park featured very prominently in season three. The show also filmed at the Backwoods Inn for pivotal scenes in season one, Saugus Drugs, Brave New World Comics, Greater Pacific, Jimmy Deans and area homes and storage facilities.
Whether they do A-list advertising, paper supply sales, practice law, struggle to revive the family business or sell homes with their undead spouse, the Santa Clarita world of film and television is filled with Men in Business.
The City of Santa Clarita’s Film Office started in 2002 and currently processes over 500 permits per year, leading to approximately 1,300 film days!
