On June 28, 2013, lightning struck, creating a wildfire near Yarnell, Arizona. Tragedy occurred just two days later taking the lives of 19 City of Prescott firefighters as they were trapped in the Yarnell Hill Wildfire. This was one of the highest wildland firefighter death tolls since the early 1930’s.
With the tragedy behind him, founder and CEO of SunSeeker Enterprises, Inc. and Santa Clarita resident, Jim Moseley, decided to create the SunSeeker Fire Blanket.
The SunSeeker Fire Blanket is a new type of fire shelter that can be utilized to help protect our firefighters. “Our fire blanket is created from a ceramic fiber material that does not burn and can withstand heat up to 2,500° F,” states Jim. “It shares the same technology as the stealth / heat tiles used aboard the Space Shuttle. This is NASA technology that I’ve been able to bring to the commercial and residential sectors.”
Jim continues, “This product is extremely valuable as it exceeds the current fire proofing sprays / intumescent paints that haven’t performed well in the past by over 700°F.” The SunSeeker Fire Blanket does not burn, and only melts at over 3,000°F without smoke or fumes and is water resistant. “Our goal is to make sure that firefighters, when faced with extreme temperatures, have a much better chance of survival with the SunSeeker Fire Shelter.” Many of the fire shelters used by firefighters today can withstand up to 500°F, but the SunSeeker Fire Blanket can be made in five standard grades, withstanding temperatures from 1,472°F to 2,462°F.
“Our goal is to see the SunSeeker Fire Blanket become an essential tool for every firefighter,” states Jim. “The Yarnell Hill fire was a wakeup call; it became apparent that firefighters need a better, safer fire shelter, and we have created just that with the SunSeeker Fire Blanket.”
SunSeeker is currently developing patentable residential and commercial applications to protect homes and businesses as well. “I thought if 99 percent of the homes that burn to the ground in a wildfire from burning embers have A rated shingles and tiles then it must be happening through the heat transfer to the plywood. Our blanket stops that transfer from happening,” states Jim. “When it comes to minimizing wildfire risk, it’s better to be proactive rather than reactive….I want to make this part of the standard equipment for Wildland firefighters around the world and to be integrated into commercial and residential building in wildfire areas.”
Help make SunSeeker’s goal a reality by helping fund the product to protect our firefighters as well as to be used for commercial and residential purposes.
