Forecasting a bright Future – Jackson Stein gets closer to his dream career on All in with Cam Newton
A simulated hurricane blew up and around Jackson Stein as he stood in his backyard delivering a weather forecast in a bright yellow raincoat. To his side, a camera team from Nickelodeon captured the mayhem on a sunny afternoon in May as professional NFL quarterback Cam Newton watched on with pride.
“I could hardly breathe when the big fan and fake hail started going,” 13-year-old Jackson said of his first experience practicing his dream job. “And this didn’t even compare to the real hurricanes weather reporters face!”
Despite the undue weather, Jackson had done it – he finished his newscast with charm and won over the team at Nickelodeon. Jackson was moving on to the next round of a brand new show.
Premiered in June, All in with Cam Newton supports the big goals of some of America’s littlest dreamers. Whatever a kid’s ideal career is, Cam Newton wants to help make that vision a reality. What’s Jackson’s dream career?
“I love weather. It’s awesome!” Jackson said brightly. “It affects everyone’s lives every day, and I would love to wake up in the morning and help people start their day as their weatherman!”
Once Jackson was selected for the show, his first task was to meet the show host, Cam Newton, and demonstrate a true passion for his chosen career. That’s when the crew arrived at the Stein household and hosted a mock weather forecast.
“There was definitely an element of surprise,” said Jackson’s mother, Heather Stein. “I can say honestly everything was completely unscripted.”
Moving on, Jackson and his father, Shannon Stein, went to CBS studios to learn weather forecasting from a pro. With a big smile, Jackie Johnson stepped away from the green screen to greet her new trainee.
“I’ve always wanted to be a weatherman,” Jackson said. “But I had no idea how to get there or what they actually do every day in the studio.”
Jackson learned quickly as Jackie showed him the ropes, and Jackson discovered: Jackie had a big job. In charge of everything from research and analysis to weather graphics and anchoring, Jackie took Jackson through the job step by step.
“I thought you just walk in there, read it and boom. Done. But Jackie wakes up at 4 a.m. every day and doesn’t go to bed until 1 a.m.,” Jackson reported.
After watching Jackie, however, Jackson got his turn in front of the camera. With the support of his family and new team, he quickly mastered his first in-studio weather forecast.
“It was so much fun!” Jackson said. “They were so nice, and I learned so much!”
Throughout the filming of the show, Jackson also received tips and guidance from Cam, as well. Before the day was done, he imparted some valuable lessons.
“As parents, we’ve always tried to teach Jackson the value of hard work and preparation,” Shannon said. “If this is something you really want to do, you have to work hard at it and never give up no matter what roadblocks you may face. And choosing a positive outlook will help get you there.”
And when it came time for Cam to pass on some wisdom, he reiterated those very lessons.
“Cam said he had people in his life who pushed him and supported him, helping to get him to where he is now,” Heather recalled. “Now he wants to help do that for other kids. You could tell how much genuinely cared about Jackson’s dreams and success.”
And in between making up handshakes and clowning around on set, Cam really reached Jackson.
“My parents have been telling me to work hard since I was born,” Jackson said. “And Cam kept telling me to never give up, and eventually I’ll get there. He said I can get to my highest point and have a good life if I never give up and believe in myself,” Jackson said. “Some people are really good at their jobs but not as friendly, but Cam and Jackie are so friendly and good at their jobs. They’re trying to help others reach their highest point, too.”
