Spooky Season Flicks Filmed in Santa Clarita
Santa Clarita is a friendly community that was ranked one of the best places to raise a family on the West Coast in a web report from Smart Asset. With amenities such as Canyon Country Park, which features an award-winning inclusive play area, and the newly opened ice and entertainment center – The Cube, Santa Clarita continually strives to offer family-friendly recreational opportunities. Whether you are indulging your senses in Old Town Newhall at the SENSES block parties or enjoying the City’s many parks, the fall season in Santa Clarita is jam-packed with laughs, thrills and opportunities.
Speaking of the fall season, Halloween is right around the corner, which means the spooky season is almost here! But before you break out your decorations and costumes, take a moment to bundle up with your favorite seasonal beverage and enjoy scary movies that were filmed right here in Santa Clarita. There’s nothing more thrilling than knowing that some of the scariest, most horrifying films were created in our City!
Just a few months ago, in August, we made it through one of the most superstitiously infamous days of the year – Friday the 13th! But did you know that two installments of the Friday the 13th series have scenes filmed locally? While we are familiar with Walnut street in Old Town Newhall being used for staging parade floats for the City’s Fourth of July parade, did you know that the suburban street was also featured in Friday the 13th Part III as character Vera Sanchez’s family home? Part IV also filmed scenes on the northern edge of Santa Clarita off Bouquet Canyon Road, where a then-standing general market was featured as Harold and Edna’s general store in the film. Part IV also filmed locally at Veluzat movie ranch, located near the City’s Archery Range in Haskell Canyon.
While Marvel Cinematic Universe productions like Wandavision and Black Widow have filmed scenes locally, the much more terrifying and insidious Conjuring Cinematic Universe, which chronicles the true accounts of paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren (played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson), have also filmed in Santa Clarita. Released in 2016, The Conjuring 2 had captivated audiences when Patrick Wilson’s character ventures to a flooded basement and comes face to face with a not-so-friendly ghost lurking in the depths of the murky water. The thrilling scene was filmed on a soundstage located in the City.
Filmgoers looking for more recent films can find scares in the near-silent thriller A Quiet Place 2, directed by John Krasinski. Starring Krasinski and his wife, the uncompromising Emily Blunt, Krasinski ventures far outside ahis Dunder Mifflin days in Scranton, Pennsylvania, when his family’s perfect life in upstate New York is turned upside down as a hostile alien invasion forces Krasinski and his family to fight for their lives in this heartbreaking thriller that will have you jumping out of your seat one moment, crying the next, but rooting for them the entire time.
Adding over $30 million of positive economic impact per year to the City’s economy, the City of Santa Clarita’s Film Office processes over 500 permits annually, working with film and television productions across the country, including the productions mentioned above.
