A Creative Journey: Naomi Young’s Multimedia Art Exhibition “TEXTURA”
“Every day is a new chance to create something new,” says Naomi Young, a multimedia artist whose vibrant work has captivated audiences around the world. Born in Jerusalem, Israel, Naomi has been a prolific creator since discovering her artistic talent as an adult. With no formal training or childhood access to art supplies, Naomi’s journey is a testament to the power of self-discovery and passion.
Since our last feature, Naomi has been diligently preparing for her upcoming solo art exhibit, “TEXTURA,” which will be showcased at The Main, on Main Street in downtown Newhall. This highly anticipated exhibit will run from August 6 through the end of September 2024, featuring twenty-five diverse art pieces. Her collection spans a variety of mediums, including soft chalk, colored pencils, watercolor, woven tapestries, mixed techniques, oil, acrylics, and mosaics.
Naomi reflects on her artistic journey: “I didn’t know that I could do art until I tried as an adult. I never had any art supplies or lessons as a child, and now the child in me is making up for lost time.” This self-taught, multifaceted artist finds joy in exploring different mediums. She explains, “When I paint in acrylics, I miss the texture of oil; when I paint in oil, I miss the softness of watercolor. In between, I use pastels, alcohol ink, and a lot of mosaic. That’s the ADD in me that’s pulling me in every direction. I feel that exploring all mediums only adds interest to my day. This is a dream exhibit to show off so many mediums on a variety of surfaces.”
Naomi’s passion for mosaics connects her to an ancient form of art. “Mosaic is my new passion; it connects me to an ancient form of art that’s been done for thousands of years, making an image from broken stones or tiles. Israel has its share of ancient mosaic floors of synagogues. During my travels in Jerusalem, Barcelona, Athens, and Rome, I’ve seen beautiful mosaics that inspired me.” One of her standout pieces is a mosaic that appears as if it were excavated from ancient Jerusalem. “I also wrote on a tile, in Hebrew calligraphy, the prayer of the Shema—the most important prayer in Judaism. As a Hebrew teacher, I like to showcase a little from the Jewish traditions.”
Among the pieces to be exhibited, Naomi’s most treasured work is a mosaic table measuring 54” x 18”. Created over 4 1/2 months during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, this piece features thousands of broken ceramic tiles arranged into a happy scene with a girl picking flowers and a boy flying a kite in a field full of flowers.
Naomi draws inspiration from nature, often painting flowers, landscapes, and seascapes. She aims to transport viewers to another place through her art, adding colors and joy to their lives. “Every day I feel motivated to create. I get my inspiration from nature. While doing it, I escape during hard times to feel more relaxed. These days I feel prolific and allow the child in me to celebrate in all the colors of the rainbow.”
In addition to her visual art, Naomi has published two poetry books in Hebrew and English, adorned with her artwork. She also writes a monthly article of inspiration for Santa Clarita Magazine, a tradition she has maintained for over six years. Naomi feels that she is still re-creating herself and believes the best is yet to come.
