Welcome to the Ross-cienda!

by Kelly Bennett
The Ross home in the Wildhorse Ridge area of Castaic is indeed an entertainer’s delight with classic and comfortable décor and amenities. The 4200-square foot main house features a five bedroom, five bath gated estate is a “work in progress” for Kelly and Selma Ross. The semi-custom home, purchased in 2001, has been a labor of love for the Ross Family since much of the home and all of the landscaping was designed and built by them and their relatives. “In the beginning, we had two acres of dirt. Lots of dirt,” says Selma laughingly. Kelly, owner of Ross Concrete and Masonry, designed and built the pool, tennis court, yard, and fireplaces. Selma’s father, a retired engineer, built most every wooden design element in the home including entertainment centers, bars, dining island, and crownings. “Not having been trained in woodworking, most people are extremely impressed with the quality of Dad’s work,” says Selma. The pool area is reminiscent of a resort with multiple seating areas, BBQ, outdoor fireplace and ceiling fans. The immense pool has a beach entrance, three waterfalls, and built-in umbrella-covered seating. A tennis court, enjoyed by all family members, is adjacent. The views are spectacular. The “pool house” is a 1,000 square foot block structure (for fire safety) “where everybody hangs out,” according to Kelly. The Ross’ have two teenage sons: Erik, 16, a junior at West Ranch and Kyle, 18, who began college this fall at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. It is easy to see why Erik, Kyle and their friends would frequent the Ross pool house given its full kitchen and bar, billiards table, 60 inch flat screen TV and large and comfortable seating. “We just love having the boys’ friends over. They are always welcome here,” says Kelly. The home’s décor reflects earthy tones with hints of red. Custom ironwork and crystals are found throughout. A good deal of the furniture was purchased locally. The grand kitchen easily seats ten. A lovely 14-foot granite island is a favorite place for family and friends to gather. All kitchen appliances are made by Viking. A planning desk also makes for a comfortable and sunny place for the Ross’ to do work….on this particular date a place to plan Kelly’s 50th birthday party with over 100 guests. Two large crystal chandeliers preside over the dining room illuminating a lovely cherry dining room table. Selma designed and made all of the elaborate draperies in the home; this area features deep chestnut and gold colored silk velvets with Swarovski crystals. Also on the first floor one will find the living room, family room, den and guest bathroom. All flooring is Travertine. The couple’s master bedroom suite is on the second floor. The room is decorated with florals, tapestry and large furniture. The hand-carved four-poster bed overlooks the pool area. The guest room, also on the second floor, serves as Selma’s sewing room. It was recently redecorated and was re-painted in a bold “Autumn Leaves” color. The boy’s rooms are also nearby: one decorated in blues and the other in reds and grey tones. When asked about hobbies, it apparently was difficult to answer. “I guess the house is our hobby!” says Selma, “and this house has given us great satisfaction!” Adds Kelly, “When I come home from work, I want to feel like I’m on vacation.”
