A Journey of Love and Service Liz and Jim Seipel
Liz Seipel’s journey spans from the heartland of North Dakota to the sun-soaked landscapes of California, with her path intertwined with love, dedication, and a profound commitment to community service. Born in Oakes, North Dakota, Liz found herself transplanted in the busy city of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She grew up as the middle child in a family of five, with two brothers and two sisters, learning the values of compassion, hard work, and resilience from a young age.
Driven by a passion for education, Liz pursued her studies at the University of Minnesota, where she majored in elementary education and earned her Bachelor’s Degree and later earned a Master’s Degree in Organizational Psychology along with a teaching credential. Armed with her education, Liz ventured westward to California, where she began her teaching career. After a few years in the classroom, Liz took a hiatus to focus on raising her young children, embodying the timeless role of caregiver and nurturer.
In 1973, Liz’s professional journey took a significant turn when she joined St. Stephen’s Episcopal Pre-School in Valencia. It was here that she forged lifelong connections with colleagues Carol Gelsinger and Katie Clark. Together, they laid the foundation for what would become the St. Stephen’s Special School, later evolving into the esteemed Child & Family Center. Liz’s dedication to the Center knew no bounds as she pursued further education, obtaining qualifications in special education and organizational psychology. Her tireless efforts culminated in her appointment as the Executive Director of the institution in 1980, a role she embraced with unwavering commitment and passion.
Amidst her professional endeavors, Liz’s personal life took a serendipitous turn. Jim Seipel, a devoted priest at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, became an integral part of Liz’s life. Their friendship blossomed into a romance, and despite the challenges of previous marriages, they found solace and joy in each other’s company. In a moment of spontaneity, they decided to seal their love with a quick courthouse wedding in Las Vegas, a decision that surprised many but solidified their bond in a profound way. Subsequently, they celebrated their union with a formal ceremony, surrounded by loved ones and cherished memories.
As they embarked on their journey together, Liz and Jim found solace and joy in the simple pleasures of life. Gardening is a shared passion, as they tend to the vibrant blooms in their backyard. They enjoy leisurely walks through the foothills surrounding the SCV, relishing in the beauty of nature and each other’s company.
Their family, consisting of four children and seven grandchildren, brings them immeasurable joy. Despite living in different states, their family remains tightly knit, gathering for special occasions, and creating lasting memories together.
In retirement, Liz and Jim continue their legacy of service, actively engaging in volunteer work within the community. Jim is still an active priest (although he is technically retired), currently providing services at three churches in the Antelope Valley. Jim and Liz’s involvement with organizations like Rotary and the Salvation Army further exemplify their dedication to making a difference in the lives of others. Together, they embraced the principle of “Service Above Self,” embodying the values of compassion and generosity that defined their lives.
As they navigate the challenges of life and growing old together, Liz and Jim have found fulfillment in each other’s company, always with a sense of humor and having fun together. Theirs is a love story of resilience, companionship, and unwavering devotion—a testament to the enduring power of love to overcome life’s challenges and illuminate the path forward.
