A Legacy of Leadership: Cameron Smyth’s Unwavering Commitment to Santa Clarita
Cameron Smyth, a five-time Mayor of Santa Clarita, is the true embodiment of public service and devotion to family and community. A lifelong Santa Clarita resident, Cameron’s journey began in a family deeply rooted in the values of education and civic duty. His father, Clyde Smyth, was an influential educator and community leader who served as the superintendent of the William S. Hart Union High School District, City Council member, and Mayor. Cameron’s mother, Sue Smyth, was a dedicated teacher in the Newhall School District and spent 40 years supporting Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital as a member of the Foundation.
Cameron attended all local schools—Peachland Elementary, Placerita Junior High, and Hart High School. During his high school years, Cameron was an active athlete, lettering in track, volleyball, and football. This early involvement in sports would later translate into a passion for coaching and mentoring young athletes in our community.
After graduating from Hart, Cameron pursued higher education at the University of California, Davis. He earned a degree in Rhetoric and Communications, further honing his skills in public speaking and leadership while continuing his athletic pursuits, which further laid the foundation for his future career in public service.
Returning to Santa Clarita after college, Cameron immediately immersed himself in the community. He coached high school volleyball and football, passing on his knowledge and passion to the next generation. His formal involvement in local politics began with a role on the staff of then-Assemblyman Pete Knight. Cameron’s organizational skills and political acumen were instrumental in running Knight’s successful campaign for the State Senate in 1996.
In 2000, Cameron Smyth followed in his father’s footsteps and was elected to the Santa Clarita City Council, marking the beginning of a distinguished political career. During his six years on the City Council, Cameron served two terms as mayor, focusing on public safety, economic development, and the expansion of the City’s parks and recreation programs. His leadership was pivotal in maintaining a balanced budget, building upon Santa Clarita’s reputation as one of the safest cities in the nation, and fostering a thriving community.
Cameron’s dedication to public service extended beyond the City Council, and in 2006, he was elected to the California State Legislature as an Assemblyman for the 38th District. His tenure in Sacramento was marked by a commitment to bipartisan cooperation and effective governance. In 2010, Cameron made history by becoming the Chairman of the Assembly Local Government Committee, the only member of the minority party to chair a major policy committee at the time. Under his leadership, the committee initiated numerous reforms to address scandals in local governments and improve transparency and accountability.
During his time in the Assembly, Cameron’s legislative achievements were numerous. He played a key role in securing funding for critical infrastructure projects, such as the expansion of the 118 freeway in Simi Valley and the Cross Valley Connector in Santa Clarita. Cameron also championed environmental and energy issues, advocating for renewable energy transmission and green building standards. His efforts to improve public safety and support for animal welfare earned him recognition from various organizations, including the California Sheriff’s Association and the Humane Society of the United States.
In 2012, after serving his three terms in the Assembly, Cameron transitioned to the private sector, joining a healthcare company as Vice President of State Affairs. Despite leaving elected office, his heart remained in public service. Cameron and his wife, Lena, continued to be active members of the Santa Clarita community, volunteering with numerous organizations but most importantly, raising their three children: Gavin, Rowan, and Kenley. In addition, Lena has spent the last decade serving the students of Santa Clarita as an Adjunct Professor of Political Science at COC and most recently joined the faculty at The Masters University.
Cameron’s passion for community service led him back to local politics in 2016. He successfully ran for the Santa Clarita City Council, marking his return to the council and serving again as mayor in 2017 and 2020. His leadership was especially critical during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he provided regular updates and guidance to the residents of Santa Clarita, ensuring the community remained informed and supported during challenging times. He called for the creation of the community’s Task Force to Address Homelessness and served as Chair until this year. The Task Force played a key role in supporting the creation of Bridge to Home’s permanent shelter project, and under his leadership, the City also hosted their first Martin Luther King Jr. Day Walk, which is now a cherished tradition in the community.
Throughout his career, Cameron Smyth has remained deeply connected to his roots in Santa Clarita. He lives in the Happy Valley area of Newhall, near his childhood home, where his mother still resides. His children attend the same schools he did, continuing the family’s legacy in the community.
Cameron Smyth’s dedication to Santa Clarita is a testament to his unwavering commitment to his community. Over decades of service, he has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of its residents, from his early days coaching local sports to his influential roles on the City Council and in the California State Legislature. His leadership has been pivotal in advancing public safety, economic development, and community programs, always with a focus on bipartisan cooperation and effective governance.
As Santa Clarita prepares for its first by-district election in November 2024, it is a poignant moment for the City and for Mayor Smyth. Due to the timing of the election, with only two districts up for election this year, Cameron finds himself without a district to run in. While this marks a significant change in his direct involvement in local politics, it also provides an opportunity to reflect on his substantial contributions to the community. We express our profound gratitude and appreciation for his decades of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of Santa Clarita. Thank you, Mayor Cameron Smyth, for your remarkable dedication and the lasting positive influence you have had on our City.
