ARTOBER – Join the Online Art Party With The City of Santa Clarita
October is National Arts and Humanities Month – a coast-to-coast collective recognition of the importance of culture in America. The City of Santa Clarita is celebrating with several exciting happenings throughout the ARTober month. There are several ways you can join the Art Party to raise awareness about the role that arts and humanities play in our community.
With more than a dozen gallery spaces in Santa Clarita, there is no shortage of opportunities to see great art. Starting October 11, 2019, the Santa Clarita Valley Photographers Association will have the Spring Print Competition exhibited in the First Floor Gallery located at City Hall. This exhibit will showcase the winners and those receiving merit in the group’s 2018 and 2019 annual competition.
Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Santa Clarita Skatepark with a dedication of a colorful abstract mural titled “Inertia” by Chicago artist Miguel A. Del Real. The dedication is open to the public and will be held Saturday, October 19, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at the Santa Clarita Skate Park.
Santa Clarita’s favorite block party, SENSES, is spookier than ever with the Halloween Haunt on Thursday, October 17, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Vote for your favorite decorated pumpkin, try your luck at pumpkin bowling, get your face painted and dance the night away in costume with the 80’s rock band, Past Action Heroes.
Let’s do the Time Warp again for the 1975 cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show!” This is the perfect kickoff to your Halloween festivities, don’t miss two screenings of this musical science fiction, comedy, horror film at The MAIN in Old Town Newhall on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26, at 11:30 p.m. For other shows happening at The MAIN visit www.AtTheMain.org.
At the end of the month, the second annual Arts Symposium will be on Saturday, October 26, from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at The Centre, located at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway in Santa Clarita. This symposium is free and open to artists of all skill levels and experiences, who are encouraged to attend the day-long educational conference focused on helping artists reach new heights.
Aspiring poets and writers of all ages can submit an original poem to the 2020 Sidewalk Poetry Project, selected juried poems will be stamped into sidewalks. The theme is Poetry of Place; poems should reflect the cultural, natural and shared spaces in our community. Let the Santa Clarita landscape and the built environment be your inspiration. Enter your poem on SantaClaritaArsts.com before the Thursday, October 31, deadline.
