Chiquita Canyon has been quietly serving the Santa Clarita Valley for 40 years. While operating a landfill is not necessarily a glamorous business, it is an important one for our society. Chiquita Canyon, located off State Route 126 is the final destination for waste from homes within the Santa Clarita Valley. But what makes Chiquita Canyon a special part of our community is how it operates its business and gives back to the local community. Chiquita Canyon is widely recognized within its own industry for running a clean, safe facility. Additionally, the company has been locally awarded the 2012 SCV Leadership Award for medium size Business of the Year and was also recognized earlier this year by the Castaic Chamber of Commerce as Business of the Year. Last fall, Chiquita Canyon, with the help of LA County Supervisor, Michael D. Antonovich, opened a 9.2 Mega Watt Clean Energy Facility which converts methane gas from the landfill into energy. The Clean Energy Facility, operated by Ameresco, allows Chiquita Canyon to operate sustainably using energy generated on-site to power the landfill and then put additional clean energy megawatts on the power grid, powering approximately 6,000 homes per year. “All of us at Chiquita Canyon and Waste Connections are very proud to have a state-of-the-art clean energy facility taking a naturally occurring bi-product from the landfill and turning it into a clean source of energy,” said Mike Dean of Chiquita Canyon. “It’s truly a great story of sustainability and one that serves as a model for other landfills across the nation. The ability to take a disposal facility for the community and turn it into a generator of clean energy is truly an amazing way to help give back.” With the new power plant in operation Chiquita Canyon is reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 45,000 tons. “From the environmental prospective, the annual green benefits expected from the carbon reduction are equivalent to the following: the planting of 83,191 trees, the removal of 74,602 automobiles from the road, and the conservation of 1,044,960 barrels of oil,” said William Cunningham, Senior Vice President, Ameresco. Chiquita Canyon is a 640-acre landfill located in Castaic, California, approximately 3 miles west of the Interstate 5 on State Route 126 in the Santa Clarita Valley. It has been in continuous operation for more than 40 years and is owned and operated by Waste Connections, an integrated solid waste services company. Chiquita Canyon has provided the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding Los Angeles communities with environmentally safe and efficient waste disposal services. www.chiquitacanyon.com 29201 Henry Mayo Drive, Castaic • 661-257-3655 |
