Celebrates Legacy and Cutting-Edge
Technologies in Aerospace & Defense
Curtiss-Wright Defense Solutions is one of the world’s leading suppliers of electronic system solutions for use in Aerospace & Defense applications tracing its long heritage back to the famed aviation pioneers, Orville and Wilbur Wright and Glenn Curtiss. Since its founding in 1929, when the aviation businesses built by Glenn Curtiss and the Wright Brothers were first brought together, Curtiss-Wright has continued to build on the commitment to innovation that our founders represent. December 17, 2023 marked the 120th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first powered, controlled, sustained airplane flight in history. Orville Wright, age 32, is at the controls. His brother, Wilbur Wright, age 36, ran alongside to help balance the machine. The Wright Flying Machine flew 4 times that day near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, a milestone that we take great pride in celebrating.
The company’s Integrated Systems business in Santa Clarita was originally founded in 1985 as Vista Controls and was acquired by Curtiss-Wright in 2001. Fast forward 120 years from the Wright Brother’s first flight, the company remains dedicated to airborne missions. The Santa Clarita facility designs and produces highly rugged and reliable mission and sensor processing systems for the latest manned and unmanned military aircraft operating in the harshest environments. From the extreme cold of high altitude flight to the heat of a desert tarmac; the company design solutions to support our warfighters,
Placement of the Integrated Systems business in Santa Clarita was a strategic decision by the company to ensure ease of travel to the local defense community in Palmdale and other parts of Southern California. Serving customers like Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, and General Atomics on airborne platforms such as RQ-4, CH-53K, and RQ-9 for the Navy, Marines, and Air Force is efficient from SCV.
Curtiss Wright is rightfully proud of the missions they support and honored to be a trusted partner to our Nation and Allies. Locally, Curtiss Wright Integrated Systems is a passionate supporter of the Santa Clarita community, supporting such local charity efforts as JCI’s toy drives and Single Mother’s Outreach, in addition to adopting several families for the holidays. The company reports plans for significant outreach to local high schools and colleges in 2024 to generate STEM interest and technical mentorship programs. Engaging the future workforce early has proven invaluable for growth.

Orville Wright, age 32, is at the controls of the machine, lying prone on the lower wing with hips in the cradle which operated the wing-warping mechanism. His brother, Wilbur Wright, age 36, ran alongside to help balance the machine, having just released his hold on the forward upright of the right wing. The starting rail, the wing-rest, a coil box, and other items needed for flight preparation are visible behind the machine. (Orville Wright preset the camera and had John T. Daniels squeeze the rubber bulb, tripping the shutter.)

The Wright brothers, (left) Orville Wright (August 19, 1871 – January 30, 1948) and (right) Wilbur Wright (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912), were American aviation pioneers generally credited with inventing, building, and flying the world’s first successful motor-operated airplane.[3][4][5] They made the first controlled, sustained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft with the Wright Flyer on December 17, 1903, four miles (6 km) south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, at what is now known as Kill Devil Hills. The brothers were also the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible.
