Dance Studio 84: Celebrating 40 Years of Dance, Dedication, & Community
Dance Studio 84, a key figure in the Santa Clarita Valley’s dance community, is proudly celebrating its 40th anniversary. Established in 1984 by Cindi and Leo Gallegos, the studio was aptly named to reflect its founding year. Two years later, ownership transitioned to Carla Hunt Smallwood, who guided the studio for an impressive 36 years, fostering a nurturing environment for dancers of all ages and skill levels.
Over the past four decades, Dance Studio 84 has introduced the art of dance to thousands of children and adults in the Santa Clarita Valley. The studio offers a diverse range of classes, including tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, tumbling, and contemporary dance. With over 100 classes available each week, there are opportunities for everyone, from beginners to advanced dancers.
One of the studio’s hallmark events is its annual production of “The Nutcracker Ballet,” which began in 1985. What started with just a few props and segments of the full score has evolved into a full-length performance that has become a cherished holiday tradition for many families in the community.
In addition to “The Nutcracker,” Dance Studio 84 provides numerous performance opportunities, including annual recitals, competitions, and participation in community events. The studio is also home to Company 84, a premier team of dancers who train with some of Southern California’s best instructors.
The current owners, Carrie Pumilio and Shannon McNey, continue to uphold the studio’s mission of sharing the love of dance in a friendly and fun atmosphere. They invite prospective students to experience the studio firsthand by offering free trial classes and maintaining competitive tuition rates. Located near Valencia High School, Dance Studio 84 welcomes individuals of all ages to join their dance family and participate in upcoming performances, including the June recital.
As Dance Studio 84 celebrates this significant milestone, it reflects on a rich history of dance education and community involvement. The studio looks forward to continuing its legacy, inspiring new generations of dancers, and contributing to the vibrant cultural fabric of the Santa Clarita Valley for many years to come.
