Deputy Richard Murray Taking Pride in Your Community
Growing up with two parents who served in the military means learning the importance of giving back to your community and defending it, too. That’s the beginning of Deputy Richard Murray’s story – it’s a story of how a love for your city and your career come together to instill a sense of pride and honor in everything you do.
Deputy Murray knew from the start that he was meant for a career in law enforcement, having been introduced by a ride-along with a family friend all those years ago. He joined the LASD Academy at College of the Canyons in 2013, and after graduating in 2014, he joined our police department as a Deputy Sheriff.
“From the moment I started, I knew that I finally found something I truly love to do,” he says. “I feel very blessed to have such a career and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
Deputy Murray has played a lot of roles during his time in the department, including Custody, Patrol Deputy, Firearms Instructor, and now, a Master Field Training Officer. Most recently, however, he’s taken his career and his interest in law enforcement even further; he applied to law school and is now hoping to earn his Juris Doctorate and pass the Bar exam to gain a better understanding of both the law and law enforcement.
In his time as an officer in our community, Deputy Murray has had his fair share of exciting (and dangerous) encounters with all kinds of people – as he says it, there’s no such thing as an “average day” when you’re doing what he’s doing.
“You never know what you’re going to face, but what I do know is that I want to make a difference and I’m striving to make positive change in my community,” he shares.
Deputy Murray loves Santa Clarita – he takes great pride in the togetherness and solidarity that its residents share, and the unity that comes with a community that prioritizes compassion over all else.
“The community here is second to none,” he says. “I have never seen a community come together with such strong, unyielding support for their fellow man.”
In terms of his future, in addition to passing the Bar exam and elevating his career in law enforcement, he hopes to have accumulated some time in an investigator deputy capacity, and ideally have taken on the rank of Sergeant or Lieutenant.
He also hopes to open up a business as a side line, providing public safety equipment and resources to first responders across all fields.
When he’s not in the field or researching the law, he’s spending time with his three kids, all of whom attend school right here in our community. He’s a fan of movies and T.V., with a particularly “geeky” soft spot for anime and the Star Wars franchise.
“I’m a normal guy who likes to hang out with friends, try new places to eat, and enjoy the simple things in life,” he says. “But at the end of the day, it’s my community and my career that motivate me to go above and beyond to protect the people I serve each and every day.”
