Harmonizing Passion: Allan Petker’s Journey With The Santa Clarita Master Chorale
On stage, the Santa Clarita Master Chorale appears as a flawlessly rehearsed, intricately constructed work of art that flows in unison. Every note, rhythm, and beat is meticulously fine-tuned under the leadership of Artistic Director Allan Petker. Throughout his 40+ year career, Allan has perfected the art of musicality and performance, and since 2004, it’s been his mission to bring this passion to the Santa Clarita Valley.
As Artistic Director, Allan is responsible for coordinating and organizing the Master Chorale’s rehearsal schedule, overseeing auditions, and, of course, leading his group of talented musicians to excellence. On any given day, his mind is filled with music from times past and present, which keeps him (and his chorale) on their toes. Music is, in and of itself, a language and a tool that can be used to unite audiences across the world, and that’s what Allan and his chorale work towards every single day.
“Our chorale enables us to address many themes – social justice, unity, caring for one another, and other meaningful messages,” says Allan. “It’s a microcosm of the community in which we all live.”
Having achieved such feats as conducting at Carnegie Hall and establishing his own publishing company, Pavane Publishing, Allan has come to realize that holding his role is a true privilege. During Allan’s tenure, the chorale has toured and performed in Argentina and Scotland, and the next tour will take place in Spain. The 2024-2025 season will celebrate the chorale’s 25th anniversary, an accomplishment that brings Allan much pride.
The chorale is far more than just a group of musicians coming together for a performance. It’s about passion, discipline, dedication, and emotion – all of which come together under the umbrella of artistry that is the Master Chorale.
“The chorale is a family,” he says. “We meet regularly and work towards a common goal, and that unifies us.”
Since its inception in 1998, the chorale has amassed an incredible record of guest performers, one-of-a-kind talents, and fresh faces that maintain its dynamic presence. The chorale’s internship program invites high school and college students from across Santa Clarita and such campuses as CalArts, California State University Northridge, and the University of Southern California to partake in the work that the chorale does.
The chorale encourages musical involvement at any age, whether it be recreational, in worship, or through school. Rehearsals teach a level of artistry and discipline that elevates the way each chorale member faces life’s challenges and develops a sense of resiliency and perseverance. These singers learn not only how to reach their full musical potential but also how to incorporate the skills of perseverance and dedication into their everyday lives.
“Music is very unifying,” says Allan. “Artistry is extra-dimensional. I feel so blessed to stand in front of the singers and instrumentalists that create such beauty and passion for our community.”
