Kids Activities For Fall Time
The changing of leaves signals the start of a fresh new autumn season, and with it comes a variety of new ways to have fun right in the comfort of your own home. From handmade crafts to outdoor mini projects, check out these activities that are perfect for kids of all ages.
Painting pumpkins. This activity is perfect as we get closer and closer to Halloween time. Pick up a couple of small to medium-sized pumpkins at any craft store as well as some paint supplies and have a field day decorating your very own fall pumpkin at home. From scary vampire-themed designs to the more playful smiley-faces, your kids will have a blast helping you “spookify” the house for the coming season. Using supplies like feathers and googly eyes can help add to the creativity behind each pumpkin, so encourage your kids to let their imaginations run wild as they experiment with different pumpkin designs.
Make your own bird feeders. With just a toilet paper roll, some peanut butter and bird seed, kids can make their very own bird feeders right in the comfort of their own home. Use a spreading tool (butter knives work, but anything with a flat surface suffices) to spread peanut butter across the toilet roll. Roll it onto some bird seed (available at most supermarkets or gardening shops) and voila – you’re ready to attract some beautiful birds! Set the bird feeder out anywhere in your yard or on your porch and watch the birds flock to your project.
Create unique pinecone turkeys. When it gets closer to Thanksgiving, crafting a pinecone turkey can double as a fun activity and as a creative way to spice up your Thanksgiving dinner spread. Whether you opt for natural pinecones or those purchased from craft stores, pinecones can be made all the more fun with some art supplies and a little creativity. Glue googly eyes, feathers, and a foam beak onto any pinecone to design a Thanksgiving pinecone turkey for the ages. You can even add a bit more detail by pulling some leaves from the backyard and gluing them onto the back for more dramatic “tailfeathers”.
Mess around with pumpkin pie playdough. A can of pumpkin, three tablespoons of pumpkin pie spice and 2-3 cups of corn starch are all that’s necessary to create a delicious-smelling fall playdough concoction. Combine the canned pumpkin and spice while slowly adding in corn starch, mixing well as you go. Once the dough reaches your desired consistency, use your hands to knead it and you’re ready to go. You can add to the playdough perfection by purchasing some playdough stamps in the shapes of leaves, pumpkins, and other fun autumn shapes.
Craft creatures out of popsicle sticks. With just a handful of popsicle sticks, permanent markers and paint, your kids can create all sorts of fall-time creatures from start to finish. After painting or coloring each popsicle stick as desired, simply glue them together and add accents using markers to draw in ears, eyebrows, or a witch nose. Googly eyes and construction paper can help add a colorful turkey beak or straw to a scarecrow’s hat if you want to get more detailed with your designs. Hats, turkey “feathers”, and other details can be added to spice up your popsicle stick creature and at the end of the day, you’ll have a collection of spooky faces to liven up your fall-time décor.
