Kids Craft Opportunities
By now, most kids are back to school and navigating their way through a new type of learning environment as a result of the challenging times we are in. As they embark on a new school year, it’s important to remember the necessity of artistic activities and creative outlets in their development and growth as well. Not only does art encourage them to be imaginative, but it can also boost self-confidence in allowing them to work through a creative project from beginning to end. The City of Santa Clarita continues to encourage creative expression and art through various programs and activities. Additionally, City staff have recently developed various arts and crafts opportunities for kids to explore and enjoy from home.
Craft opportunities for kids, teens and even adults can first be found at any of the three Santa Clarita Public Library branches. To coincide with Fall programming, the library team is offering new Grab and Go Craft and Activity Kits on Tuesdays, while supplies last. Crafts can include sock puppets easily constructed from socks, markers, glue and decorations. Or, kids can participate in creating a homemade lava lamp by combining Alka Seltzer, food coloring, water and vegetable oil into a clear glass container. Crafts range in difficulty level, but can greatly help kids further develop an interest in art, along with the ability to follow directions and see their project to completion.
Another craft destination for children to take on new art projects is the Virtual Rec Center’s “Crafts Corner” videos. Each short video invites kids to follow along in building a special craft. A recent “Crafts Corner” video provided instructions for shaving foam marbled art that truly lets kids’ imaginations run wild on what the final project should look like. Other projects have included a glowing campfire, lanyards, a mystery box game and many more.
Last, the City’s “Tote 2 Go” Program offered by the Newhall and Canyon Country Community Centers should also be considered for fun and creative craft projects for kids. The “Tote 2 Go” Program invites you to pick up a colorful tote bag filled with a variety of supplies for fun activities, crafts and games. This is another great way for kids to use their brains and their hands to complete an art project.
Current health guidelines and COVID-19 restrictions do not mean parents should forget about encouraging creative outlets. Art and crafts are essential in the development of children and can provide a nice break from the many stressors that may be affecting them at this time.
