Liven Up Your Living Room and Stream
Can you believe it has already been a year since we started to watch movies and television show premieres from home? We are living through a new age of entertainment where virtual hangouts and streaming parties are becoming the new normal. Instead of meeting up with friends and enjoying fresh popcorn at Edwards Cinema, we are now ordering takeout from our favorite local restaurants and dining in while binge-watching smash-hit shows like “Tiger King.”
Speaking of favorites, award season is the time of year when actors, directors and filmmakers alike gather together and celebrate what has been released in the last year. However, the award show producers are transforming their productions into virtual celebrations that have made way for unprecedented entertainment. The Golden Globes took place in March, and what better way to kick off the award season than former hosts and Saturday Night Live legends: Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. But instead of delivering their opening remarks standing next to each other at the Beverly Hilton, both hosts performed on separate stages in Los Angeles and New York but were broadcasted simultaneously. Some of the nominated films, including “The Prom” featuring James Corden and Palm Springs starring Andy Samberg, were filmed right here in Santa Clarita.
Viewers were captivated by the recently released finale to the acclaimed Disney+ series “WandaVision.” Filmed right here in Santa Clarita at Golden Oak Ranch, Marvel superheroes Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and The Vision, played by Paul Bettany, mysteriously wind up in a charming 1950’s sitcom in the quaint town of Westview following the events of Avengers Endgame. But things are not what they seem, as strange things begin to happen in Westview. While there are plenty of on-screen Easter eggs that Marvel fans will search for frame by frame, we are all looking forward to Wanda’s next adventure as she explores her new-found powers as the Scarlett Witch in the highly anticipated film “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which is slated to be Marvel’s first horror film. In addition to being featured as downtown Westview for WandaVision, the city lot at Golden Oak Ranch has also been used for other productions, including Beyonce’s music video for Hold Up!
If science fiction is not your go-to watch, “Goliath,” starring Billy Bob Thornton, is the perfect drama with scenes filmed locally. Thornton plays Billy McBridge, a disgraced lawyer who seeks redemption while getting revenge on the law firm he helped create. While the television series is four seasons in, Billy still has plenty of fight left and has enlisted a team of outcasts to help him on his next case.
Even though Santa Clarita has experienced much change due to the COVID-19 pandemic, filming in Santa Clarita remains strong as productions continue to take advantage of the City’s numerous movie ranches and studios, diverse set of filming locations and proximity to Hollywood. While we all must hang tight for a bit longer before movie theaters reopen, movie releases can still be watched from the comfort of your own living room!
