New Art & Event Opportunities for 2021
What types of art interests or inspires you? Maybe you love painting or playing an instrument, performing in theatrical productions, filmmaking, painting, pottery or any of the other mediums. Wherever your art interests lie, the City of Santa Clarita offers a vast amount of opportunities for you to enjoy as a viewer or participant. We are just one month into the new year, and the City’s Arts and Events Division, along with The MAIN, already have an exciting lineup of programs and events for residents to experience from the comfort of their home.
If you are looking to showcase artistic abilities, the City’s Arts and Events Division currently has an open call for entries to their upcoming “Creative Comforts” art exhibit. Cook up a delectable piece of artwork depicting your favorite comfort food in a medium of your choosing. These mediums can range from paintings to drawings, printmaking, photography and textiles. This is a great way to express yourself, and your favorite tasty dish, to residents around the community. Selected artists will have their pieces shown in both a physical show and a virtual show that will run from March 12 to May 14, 2021. Take advantage of this opportunity to have your artwork featured in a public gallery and learn more by visiting www.SantaClaritaArts.com/CallsForEntries. In addition, if food art is not your forte, you can always submit an Open Call interest form for exhibiting other types of artwork for exhibit locations throughout the City.
Although we cannot currently attend live performances in-person at The MAIN, we can take advantage of their wide variety of free virtual event opportunities from the comfort of our own home. This includes submitting your work for a chance to be selected as a participant in one of these events. One way to get involved is by taking your musical, storytelling, magic, comedy, filmmaking talents and more to the virtual stage in The MAIN’s “10 By 10” Variety Night. Presented on The MAIN’s Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/TheMAINNewhall and the City of Santa Clarita’s YouTube every first Thursday of the month, “10 By 10” allows 10 entertainers to take the stage for a ten-minute performance of their choosing. Interested participants are encouraged to fill out a submission form on www.AtTheMAIN.org. Use this event to introduce Santa Clarita residents and online viewers to your art and to perform with other talented individuals throughout our community.
The MAIN’s Stage On Screen (SOS) Theatre Fest: International offers another exciting way to watch live performances online. This marks the third edition of the popular eight-week online festival and the first International edition! Viewers are in for modern plays, interactive stories, compelling dramas, original one-acts and more from all over the world. While being stuck at home, how does a trip to Chile, Ireland or even Scotland sound to you? These are just some of the countries featured in this edition of SOS Theatre Fest. Every play is conducted for free via Zoom and offers viewers the chance to engage with cast members and production team members after the show. Working and aspiring theater performers and production staff can benefit from conversing with the international talents behind these shows, networking and learning from these artists to benefit your own craft.
The ongoing pandemic has not stopped art opportunities and events from being available to the Santa Clarita community. The City continues to work hard to create innovative, interactive and easily accessible virtual shows, calls for submissions and more for every resident. Additionally, it’s important to remember that you are not confined to only online art spaces. Santa Clarita offers many public art sculptures, murals, Sidewalk Poetry and other installations that can be viewed during a leisurely walk or bike ride around town. Stay engaged with Santa Clarita’s upcoming art events and resources by regularly monitoring www.SantaClaritaArts.com.
