The new Akbar Hasan Infusion Center at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, which opened in February of this year, was designed with the patient in mind. Walls painted in warm, soothing earth tones, natural light, large windows with views of trees, are just a few of the special touches in our new infusion center. A full-time, professional nursing staff makes sure that patients receive the best care in the best environment.

Patient well-being was the catalyst that drove improvements for infusion services in the new, 2,000 square-foot space equipped with eight new infusion chairs and staffed by two full-time RNs and a patient care technician.
“The infusion center at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital has been a wonderful resource for my patients,” said John Barstis, MD. “ It has always been staffed by top quality nurses and staff who are very experienced and able to safely handle any other issues that have come up. Patient satisfaction and loyalty has been exceptionally high. At a time when most other hospitals have eliminated the service citing expense, Henry Mayo has expanded its service to a really lovely new space.”
Henry Mayo’s infusion services include chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and intravenous antibiotics. Treatment time ranges from 60 minutes to eight hours. Registered oncology nurses provide the full range of outpatient infusion services to individuals as prescribed by their physicians. The new Infusion Center accommodates twice as many patients and visitors in more than eight times the space.
Pam Chandler was the last patient in the old infusion center located in MS3 when it closed on Feb. 15, 2013, and the first patient of the new infusion center when it opened on Feb. 18, 2013, at its new location in the F Building on Henry Mayo’s campus.
Pam and her husband Keith Chandler were impressed, not only by the much larger space of the new infusion center, but also that it was up and running so quickly and smoothly with no downtime in between.
“It’s obvious that at Henry Mayo they care about the patients, and they worked very hard to make this happen,” Keith said.
“The people here are really, really good and now the new facility is definitely a step up,” Pam said. “It’s much more peaceful here and there is a lot more room for visitor. It’s much more convenient. And Mary Csafitis, RN, is wonderful, she’s the best.”
Previously, Keith would drive around town, waiting until Pam was done with her six-hour treatments. Now, Keith can wait with Pam as they eat meals together, and there is even room for him to set out his laptop. “This is our new meeting spot for our hot dates,” he said.
Henry Mayo’s new Infusion Center and its patients are the beneficiaries of a generous donation, which was made by Haida Sheikh, a pathologist assistant, on behalf of the late Akbar Hasan.
It was through her friendship with Rashida Soni, MD, medical director of pathology and laboratory at Henry Mayo, that Sheikh decided to make the donation to benefit the new Infusion Center which opened in March 2013, and is already filling its chairs with grateful patients. Dr. Soni described the need at Henry Mayo and Sheikh responded by committing the funds.
“I decided to put all of the money to the Infusion Center because it will do good for so many people,” Sheikh said. “I thought I might fund it completely because the patients truly need this spacious area for an important services.”
“When I met with a patient the other day I can understand the importance of the community hospital,” she said. “People in smaller communities appreciate philanthropic funds because it seems so much is given to the larger university hospitals. And I realized that more could be accomplished at Henry Mayo from Mr. Hasan’s trust. Human value is the same wherever it is.”
