Primary Care And The Pursuit of Community Partnerships
Sian Durham has lived in our community for over two decades. It seemed serendipitous when she woke up one day and came face to face with an opportunity to join the team at Henry Mayo, the hospital that services SCV and has also been her dream workplace since she first learned about it. Now, she spends her days fulfilling her responsibilities as a dedicated nurse, a goal she’s had in mind since she was just five years old.
Sian is originally from England, having graduated from Manchester Royal Infirmary, where she received her adult RN qualifications. She moved to the U.S. on her own, where she established a life for herself as a healthcare practitioner and lover of all things Santa Clarita.
She spent several years as a cruise ship nurse and then became part of the Princess Cruises management team here in Santa Clarita. She has also worked for UCLA, the Motion Picture and Television Fund, and AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Needless to say, Sian has amassed a significant number of experiences during her time as a healthcare practitioner.
Today, Sian works as the Senior Director of Ambulatory Services at Henry Mayo, a job that presents new challenges and opportunities on a daily basis. She’s a registered nurse who oversees a number of ambulatory care practices at the hospital, including wound care services, urgent care, and her most recent passion project – their new primary care practice.
“My team and I are here for the community, to provide excellent care,” she says. “Now, with our primary care practice, we’re working to provide a full lifetime of services to Santa Clarita residents.”
The Henry Mayo Newhall Primary Care Practice opened this past August in response to an increased need for primary care services in our community. The center offers a wide range of ongoing healthcare services, which is a first for the hospital. Sian and her team are hopeful that the practice will help render primary care services to countless SCV residents who may have been turned away from other offices who are not taking new patients or who have extended wait times for appointments.
When asked about the most significant moments in her career, Sian has plenty to share, and the PC is just one of them.
“Nursing is a job where you’re continuously learning, and that’s one of the most special parts of my career,” she says. “I feel very privileged to be a nurse; when you see people at their worst and help them get better, it’s an incredible feeling.”
Outside of the hospital, Sian spends her time crossing places off her travel bucket list, and is particularly interested in visiting the Far East in the near future. She has a special love for animals (as evidenced by her three rescue cats and dog), and is overall looking forward to the days ahead with an optimistic attitude.
“The hospital is doing a wonderful job of listening to the community, and we’re here for the Santa Clarita community,” she says. “We’re planning on continuing the great partnership we have.”
