Can you share with us how your journey with Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital began?
It began in a rather serendipitous way. I still vividly remember my first day of nursing school, which ironically took place right here on the Henry Mayo campus. I recall a helicopter landing outside of the classroom, and as I ran outside to watch, I knew in that moment that emergency care was my calling. From there, I started my career as an ED Tech, and through hard work and determination, I’ve worked my way up through the ranks. Starting from the ground floor has truly shaped my leadership style, and I’m proud of that.

What drives your passion for your role as the Director of Emergency and Trauma Services?
It’s the people, without a doubt. The incredible team I lead, the patients we care for, and the strong sense of community that permeates every aspect of our work. At Henry Mayo, we’re not just providing medical care; we’re serving our neighbors, friends, and loved ones.

Could you share some key milestones and achievements in your career?
I’ve had the privilege of achieving several milestones that I’m proud of. From precepting new grad nurses to completing my Master’s Degree in Nursing Leadership, each accomplishment has been a stepping stone in my journey. Leading our team through the verification of our Level II Trauma Center with zero deficiencies was a particularly proud moment, made possible under the leadership of our amazing Trauma Program Manager, Gilda Cruz-Manglapus. Additionally, being involved in one of the first Covid Vaccine distribution sites in LA County and implementing a Rapid Medical Evaluation (RME) process in our ED have been significant achievements for me.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to achieve similar success in your industry?
Here are some pearls of wisdom I’d like to share:
– Nursing requires an immense amount of heart, so be prepared to pour your compassion into every patient interaction.
– Don’t be afraid to be brave; mistakes are inevitable, but they are also invaluable learning opportunities. Some of my most significant lessons have come from the mistakes I’ve made along the way.
– Seek out mentors and cultivate lifelong relationships with them. Nursing is a journey best traveled with the guidance and support of experienced professionals who can offer insight and advice.
– Always make time to pay it forward by teaching and mentoring others who are eager to learn. Sharing your knowledge and experiences not only benefits them but also enriches your own understanding and growth in the field.

How did you become involved with the Canyon Theatre Guild?
Ah, theater holds a special place in my heart, stemming from my upbringing in a family deeply rooted in the arts. Becoming involved with the Canyon Theatre Guild was almost like coming home. In 2010, I stumbled upon an audition notice for a production of “The Producers,” directed by Leslie Berra. It had been twelve years since I’d been on stage, but I decided to take the plunge and audition for the ensemble. To my delight, I got the part! Participating in that production was like a dream come true. The camaraderie, the creative energy—it was infectious. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to be part of numerous productions, including “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” and “Mamma Mia.” Each show has been a journey of self-discovery and artistic expression. Theater, for me, is more than just entertainment; it’s a form of storytelling that has the power to inspire, provoke thought, and evoke emotion. It’s a way of connecting with others and exploring the human experience in all its complexity. And now, watching my daughter follow in my footsteps, getting involved in stage management and lighting design, it feels like passing on a legacy—a love for the arts that will continue to flourish for generations
to come.

Can you tell us about your family life?
I’m lucky to have a supportive husband, Ed, and four wonderful children Sean, Scarlett, Valkyrie, and Ryden who bring joy and balance to my life. And of course, there’s our beloved furry friend, Princess Fiona, who keeps us all very entertained.

With all your responsibilities, how do you find balance?
It’s a juggling act, no doubt. But whether I’m saving lives in the ER or belting out show tunes on stage, each moment brings its own kind of fulfillment. And surrounded by such incredible people, both at work and at home, I couldn’t ask for more.

As the conversation concludes, Sarah’s warmth and dedication shine through, reflecting the heart of a leader who navigates both the challenges of healthcare and the joys of artistic expression with grace and compassion.
