Remembering Dale Gerstel – May 21, 1959 – December 29, 2024
On December 29, 2024, Dale Samuel Gerstel, one of Santa Clarita’s Unsung Heroes, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 65. As a dedicated Board Director and CFO of Prayer Angels for the Military, Inc., Dale played a pivotal role in shaping the nonprofit, which has become one of the city’s most cherished organizations. Alongside his wife and co-founder, Suzon, Dale’s efforts helped grow the organization’s reach, sending over 200,000 care packages and hosting more than 100 events to support deployed troops and veterans.
A memorable part of his legacy is the special care packages created by the cast and crew of Deadwood at the Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio. These “Deadwood Packages” were a favorite among the troops and a testament to the community support that Dale and Suzon fostered.
Above all, Dale was a man of deep faith and an unwavering family man. His devotion to his wife, Suzon, was evident in the way he cherished her, and he was an incredible father to his sons, Cody, Shane & William. His big personality and infectious sense of humor left an impression on everyone who crossed his path. Whether it was spending time with his beloved dog Dixie, a brindle boxer, or visiting veterans in his iconic black Bronco, Dale made sure to brighten the lives of those around him with acts of kindness, generosity, and love.
Dale was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Penn Hills High School in 1977. After relocating to California, he and Suzon built a life together, eventually settling in Placerita Canyon in Santa Clarita Valley. He worked for many years in the auto parts industry and later as a driver for O’Reilly Auto Parts, where he became a well-liked fixture in the community.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Jean Gerstel, and his brother Kurt Gerstel. He leaves behind his loving wife of 24 years, Suzon Gerstel; sons Cody Dykstra, Shane Gerstel; stepson William Dykstra; grandchildren Alison and Kayne; siblings Tom (Kathy), David (Maria), Jeff (Jeannie), and George Gerstel (partner Julie); his sister-in-law Donna Gerstel (Kurt); and many other beloved family members.
In the spirit of the Book of James, which emphasizes living a life of faith through compassion, kindness, and humility, Dale lived his life as an example of these virtues. Whether you knew him for years or only briefly, Dale’s warmth and generosity always left you with a smile. His legacy of love and service to others will never fade, continuing to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.
