Rising Star: Avery Rey’s Journey from Local Track Hero to National Medalist
Avery Rey shines bright as a standout athlete for the Santa Clarita Storm Track Club. This club, part of the prestigious Valley Youth Conference spanning Lancaster, Santa Clarita, Burbank, and the San Fernando Valley, nurtures young talents across 16 competitive teams. Avery’s prowess on the track earned him a coveted spot on the elite Valley United Striders, a postseason dream team showcasing the conference’s top athletes.
Avery’s journey to glory peaked at the Valley Youth Conference Championships in May, where he dominated his events—the 100m sprint, 200m dash, and 4×100 relay—securing first place in each. His stellar performance solidified his place on Valley United, propelling him into the national spotlight.
As a proud member of Valley United, Avery’s season continued to dazzle. Across seven track meets, he amassed an impressive collection of medals: 9 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze. His exceptional results didn’t just earn accolades locally; they catapulted him onto the national stage.
To qualify for the USATF National Junior Olympics, Avery needed top finishes across his events. Not only did he qualify, but he also claimed the titles of fastest 7-year-old in the nation (as of June 7) and longest 7-year-old long jumper in the country.
The pinnacle of Avery’s season came at the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics at Texas A&M University. Among nearly 8,000 athletes aged 7 to 18, Avery stood out, achieving All-American status. His remarkable performance culminated in a bronze medal in the Boys’ 7-8 Long Jump, making him the sole seven-year-old to reach the event’s finals.
Avery’s journey from local hero to national medalist is a testament to his dedication, talent, and the supportive community of coaches, teammates, and family who have nurtured his passion for track and field. As he continues to defy expectations and push the boundaries of his sport, Avery’s future in track and field looks as bright as his impressive accomplishments thus far.
