Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society Celebrates 31st Anniversary
The Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society (SCVRS) was co-founded in 1992 by Steve Jones (Valencia) and Kitty Belendez (Saugus). It’s a subsidiary of the American Rose Society, located in Shreveport, Louisiana. SCVRS is a 501c3 non-profit educational organization. Both Kitty and Steve are designated Master Rosarians due to their extensive rose knowledge, training, and experience. Steve now lives in Northern California and has served as President of SCVRS, President of American Rose Society, and President of World Federation of Roses. Kitty has served many times as President of SCVRS and Rose Show Director, as well as other positions. She has produced and distributed their award-winning 28-page, full-color digital “Rose Ecstasy” newsletter for 31 years. Kitty is also Webmaster of their website www.santaclaritarose.org and manages the SCVRS Facebook https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064695250682
SCVRS has hosted many rose garden tours, open to the public free of charge … recently at the rose garden of Kitty Belendez where she grows over 250 rose bushes. Other rose gardens throughout Santa Clarita have also been featured. For 20 years SCVRS held monthly meetings at the Newhall Senior Center until the facility was closed in 2019 so SCVRS moved to a new facility that was too small for their needs. The current SCVRS meeting place is Santa Clarita United Methodist Church on Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus. Meetings feature knowledgeable guest speakers, door prizes, refreshments, and Little Rose Shows.
Historically, the SCVRS Annual Rose Show was held at various venues, particularly the Valencia Town Center Mall for 10 years, and William S. Hart Park for 20 years until recently when access to Hart Park became unavailable. Both venues were tremendously popular because the rose show was always free to the public for exhibiting home-grown roses or just viewing the awesome displays.
Membership is currently 112 families, with 75% residing in the Santa Clarita Valley, and 25% living out of area, out of state, and other countries.
Cost to join & subscribe to SCVRS award-winning digital full-color “Rose Ecstasy” newsletter is $20 annually, or 6-month $10 special when joining in July. Mail check payable to SCVRS, to 21133 Kingscrest Drive, Santa Clarita CA 91350.
