Scranton Clarita Welcomes You
Since the pilot aired in 2005, the inner workings of a run-of-the-mill paper company – Dunder Mifflin – have captivated fans from around the world. Through years of syndication and with the advent of streaming services, “The Office” has been introduced to an entirely new generation of fans who take a break from daily life to check in on how things are going in Scranton, Pennsylvania. But did you know that by living in Santa Clarita you are closer to Scranton than most people will ever be?
That’s right – a number of Santa Clarita locations have been featured in episodes of “The Office,” which is regarded as one of the best sitcoms ever produced. In fact, Santa Clarita businesses have played starring roles in some of the series’ most memorable episodes. Perhaps the most famous location that appears on the show, aside from the Dunder Mifflin office itself, is Schrute Farms. The beet farm/bed-and-breakfast owned by Assistant to the Regional Manager, Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) often used a local movie ranch for its interior building and exterior farm scenes throughout the series.
You can visit several locations featured in the show and recreate your favorite scenes, such as when Kevin (Brian Baumgartner), Andy (Ed Helms) and Jim (John Krasinski) try to win over a new client by taking him golfing in “Job Fair” (Season 4, Episode 13). Step up to the tee at Vista Valencia Golf Course and be sure to establish the rules with your foursome – “What are we talking? Skins? Acey Ducey? Bingo Bango Bongo?”
As you continue your re-watch of the series, you’ll want to pause during Season 6, Episode 6 (“Mafia”) when Andy and Dwight convince Michael (Steve Carell) that an insurance salesman (special guest Mike Starr) is really a mafioso in disguise. The group meets the salesman for lunch in a public place – for safety, naturally – at what is now Olive Terrace Bar & Grill (formerly George’s Bistro). You may get a funny look, however, if you order your spaghetti and side salad like Michael Scott; “If the salad is on top, I send it back.”
In Season 7, Episode 16, Michael finally finishes the movie he has been writing – “Threat Level Midnight.” Watch and you will see that The Cube – Ice and Entertainment Center, Powered by FivePoint | Valencia is the backdrop for scenes where Agent Michael Scarn (Carell) learns to play hockey and later competes in the NHL All-Star Game in his quest to thwart Goldenface’s (Krasinski) evil plans.
Numerous other locations have appeared on “The Office,” including College of the Canyons’ baseball field (“The Chump” – Season 6, Episode 25) and the Hyatt Regency Valencia (“Tallahassee” and “After Hours” – Season 8, Episodes 15 and 16). Some driving scenes were also shot on City of Santa Clarita streets, so keep a close eye to see how many locations you can spot!
(“The Office” is a product of NBC Universal and can be streamed on Peacock)
