Shauna Hoffman – Advocate For Collies and Community
Shauna Hoffman is a woman of many talents. She’s a travel agent, therapist, podcast host, speaker trainer, and a devoted mother, grandmother, and wife. A through and through SCV native, Shauna and her husband Bert planted the seeds of their collective futures in our community back in 1979, and today, Shauna has made a name for herself in all of the above industries, alongside another one that holds a particularly special place in her heart: the world of dog rescues.
Shauna has always harbored a strong love for animals, and she had the chance to bring her Lassie-inspired-love to life when she became involved with Southland Collie Rescue, a nonprofit organization that covers the entirety of southern California.
SCR focuses its efforts on placing collies with loving forever homes and they harness the power of dedicated volunteers, donors, and area coordinators like Shauna who play a crucial role in ensuring that each collie gets the perfect match.
“I was always raised to give back, and since I’ve worked to help others as a therapist, I wanted to extend that to give back to animals, too,” she says.
Today, after more than a decade of service and involvement with the rescue, Shauna is Southland Collie Rescue’s Vice President as of 2024. Shauna also works as the area coordinator for the regions of Santa Clarita, Castaic, Palmdale, Lancaster, and everything in between.
SCR has been in the business of rescuing collies for over three decades, and today, they have established a strong national reputation for themselves. Other rescues and organizations across the country have reached out to SCR to collaborate and work together towards a future where every collie (and, depending on manpower, collie mix) is placed into the perfect “furever” home.
Collies are known for their gentle, yet protective and understanding nature. They are the ideal family dog, says Shauna, and there are so many opportunities to incorporate these loving animals into any household.
Collies are an incredibly patient breed, and for that reason, they can do well in any type of household, including homes with children and other dogs and animals.
At the moment, SCR is looking for trustworthy fosters that can be available to take in one of their collies at a moment’s notice. The organization relies on the efforts of fosters and volunteers to keep its doors open, and if you’re someone who shares in Shauna’s devotion to giving back and goodwill, you’re encouraged to visit their website to learn more about what role you can play in providing these gentle animals with a brighter future.
For information on volunteering, fostering, and the vast opportunities for involvement in SCR, Shauna encourages those interested to visit http://collie.org. SCR is also on Facebook as Southland Collie Rescue, and it’s here that you can actually follow along and keep track of new collies that join the SCR family. The website also features information on their newsletter, which keeps you in the loop on all things SCR.
At the moment, SCR is in significant need of fosters and volunteers, and there are a wide variety of involvement opportunities, including social media volunteers, transporters, groomers, and graphic artists. If you’re ready to give back, SCR has the perfect role waiting for you!
Loving a collie and bringing one into your home is as fulfilling and rewarding as it is fun, and Shauna encourages anyone interested to reach out to SCR to learn more about how these beautiful creatures can make a positive impact in their lives, too.
“People think that rescues are just about the dog, but very often, that’s not the case,” says Shauna. “It’s about helping the families, too.”
