Songwriting, Success and Shalamar: The Story of Howard Hewett
These are the words of wisdom that Howard Hewett has faithfully followed from the moment he first stepped foot into the music industry. Originally an Ohio native, Howard left the state and came to California in the 70s, a decision that would permanently alter the course of both his personal and professional lives.
Howard has been involved in music from the age of ten, and his move to California was the catalyst that eventually led to an impressive list of industry accolades. From European tours to sold out festivals and shows, Howard has been no stranger to the lessons and rewards handed down to him by the music business.
You may recognize him as a member of Shalamar, the Grammy-nominated and awarded band behind “Don’t Get Stopped in Beverly Hills” from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. Known for their R&B and soul vibes, Shalamar has been active for over four decades, and they’ve made quite a name for themselves as a band that keeps the music and good feelings going.
Of course, that’s just the tip of the iceberg; Howard’s involvement with Shalamar also landed him considerable success with “Second Time Around”, his first ever track with them. “Second Time Around” led the way for Shalamar’s international success – the song broke them into the European market as it quickly climbed the charts.
In addition to his time with Shalamar, Howard has also worked as a solo artist, and today he is currently working on a bucket list of performances and projects to continue solidifying his position in the industry.
“I have the utmost respect for what I do and for the blessings that I’ve realized throughout my career,” he says. “I’m always creating new music, looking for feedback from audiences, and doing everything I can to give back to the shoulders of those I stood on to get me to where I am now.”
Howard moved to Santa Clarita in 2016, and he describes it as the ideal community for him – he’s close enough to the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles and all its musical richness, but far enough out that he can ground himself and be who he really is behind the scenes.
Howard lends credit to his children and grandchildren, who have served as an unwavering source of inspiration and motivation for him. In fact, beyond all the awards and chart-topping singles, it’s his family that brings the greatest sense of pride to him.
When he’s not on tour with Shalamar or selling out solo tours across the world, he’s working out of the upstairs studio in his house and focusing on the goals he’s set for himself in the future.
“I have a 5-year plan, but I always leave room for spontaneity, for life to do what life does,” he shares. “At this point in my life, I’m having so much fun with the freedom I have to do everything I want to do.”
