Staying Healthy With Wine
Now that we’ve entered a new year and committed to our resolutions, many of us likely share a common goal: weight loss. For those who enjoy wine, it’s worth examining how it fits into a calorie-conscious lifestyle.
A typical 5-ounce glass of wine contains **100 to 160 calories**, with no fat content. Sipping a single glass alongside a healthy meal is generally not an issue. However, it’s easy to pour a second glass once the first relaxes you—especially with an open bottle in front of you! A strategy that works for me is pouring a slightly larger glass and stretching it through dinner without refilling.
Another habit I’ve adopted is avoiding alcohol after exercise. After a high-energy workout like pickleball, your body needs hydration to recover, not dehydration from alcohol. Alcohol can also slow muscle recovery, so I prefer to save my wine for later in the evening and stick to water or an electrolyte drink after exercise.
When it comes to balancing diet and indulgence, moderation is key. Some friends swear by low-calorie wines, but I prefer the rich flavors of a good wine over its “light” alternatives. For fewer calories, consider a **white wine spritzer** (wine with soda water) or a glass of **Prosecco**, which is bubbly and typically around 100 calories per serving.
To further minimize alcohol’s effects and stay hydrated, I always recommend alternating a glass of wine with a glass of water. This practice helps reduce hangover risks and creates a sense of fullness, which may curb overindulgence.
Recently, I went alcohol-free for two weeks while on medication. To stick with my evening routine, I explored zero-alcohol options. My favorite was simple: Fever Tree tonic water with a slice of citrus and a tablespoon of flavored cocktail syrup, such as those by Cocktail and Sons, which offer unique combinations of fruits and spices. The result? A satisfying drink that didn’t leave me missing vodka at all.
Finally, my best advice for managing weight while enjoying wine? Find an exercise routine you love and stick to it. I work out six days a week, which allows me to indulge without guilt. Whether it’s pickleball, running, or yoga, regular physical activity helps balance occasional treats like wine or dessert.
