The Samuel Dixon Family Health Center

by | Apr 18, 2024 | Spotlight

Located in the heart of Newhall is the Samuel Dixon Family Health Center, a full-service primary health establishment founded over two decades ago to serve the residents of Santa Clarita. As a provider of comprehensive non-emergency health services, the Center has made a name for itself as a leading presence in the fight to improve community health, increase healthcare literacy, and advocate for medical accessibility throughout our region and beyond.
Headed by CEO Philip Solomon, the Center places a heavy emphasis on providing care for those with limited access to high quality medical, dental, and behavioral health services. The Center is aimed at reaching the low income and uninsured – groups that have historically faced challenges posed by their socioeconomic status when it comes to obtaining the care they need.
“We grow and change with the needs of the community,” says Philip. “Originally, we were established out of a need for primary care services for residents of the Val Verde community, but the goal is to expand and increase access.”
Many of their patients are on Medi-Cal, but they operate on the belief that everyone should have access to health services – regardless of income or insurance. That’s why the Center will never turn anyone away for lack of funds or payment.
The Center’s initial Val Verde location still stands and operates after its founding in 1980, but today, they have health center locations in Canyon Country, Valencia, Newhall, a satellite program on campus at California Institute of the Arts, and a behavioral health facility in Valencia. As of March 2024, they are in escrow awaiting finalization of a second standalone behavioral health facility in Newhall.
The future is bright for the Center, and the goal is to ensure that every resident has unobstructed access to the medical, dental, and behavioral services they deserve, without having to worry about a devastating healthcare bill.
Additionally, though the Center primarily focuses on accessibility for the underserved, they do accept some commercial and PPO health plans – they’re an organization open to everyone.
All of the above is to say that the Center encompasses Philip and his teams’ shared goal of eliminating the financial barriers that too often prevent individuals and families from obtaining the treatment and support that they need.
“I’m proud of the partnerships and relationships we’ve built in our community,” says Philip. “The incredible work we can do is only possible when you work with incredible people.”
Moving forward, Philip hopes to incorporate specialty services such as Pediatrics , to add a second dental program, expand the Center’s Diabetes Prevention Program, and to establish a fourth full-scale health center that includes comprehensive behavioral health care.
Since his promotion to CEO in 2014, Philip has ushered in an era of success and forward progress for the Center. Under his leadership, the Center’s team has more than doubled, the budget tripled, and the types of services offered have grown both in diversity and accessibility.
The Center and its various locations stand as a testament to its founders’ compassion for community health, wellness, and dedication to equal healthcare across the entire socioeconomic spectrum.
