Thomas Bambrick: From the Gridiron to the Classroom and Beyond
Thomas Bambrick’s journey has been anything but ordinary. From the gridiron to the classroom, the publishing world, and even professional football overseas, his story is one of perseverance, passion, and giving back.
A former defensive tackle for Hart High School, Bambrick’s football career was defined by discipline and camaraderie. “It was a difficult but rewarding experience that allowed me to make many friendships and connections,” he recalls. One of his most cherished moments was returning a blocked punt for a touchdown in his final game at Hart. His time on the field instilled in him a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility. “Football taught me the importance of showing up on time, giving my best effort, and never doing anything halfway,” he says.
Bambrick continued his football career at Division II Simon Fraser University before transferring to California Lutheran, where he played until 2021. He then shifted to rugby for a few years before returning to football, signing with AIK, a professional American football team in Sweden. His journey in sports has taken him across different disciplines and continents, proving his adaptability and relentless drive.
While football remained a central part of his life, Bambrick found another passion: teaching. Pursuing his teaching credential led him to student teaching, but it was his love for history that cemented his path. “I get to talk about history for eight hours in an air-conditioned building—what’s not to love?” he jokes. Primarily focusing on 10th and 11th graders, he strives to make history engaging through role-playing, mock trials, and interactive games. “History is interesting if you make it interesting,” he asserts.
His connection with students goes beyond the classroom. As a young teacher, he finds it easier to relate to them, offering guidance on sports, academics, and life. “I try to inspire them with a ‘hey, I was in your shoes a few years ago’ approach,” he says, emphasizing mentorship as a key part of his role.
That same mentorship extends to the football field. Bambrick’s involvement with Trenton Irwin’s Youth Football Camp stems from a personal connection—Jessica Campbell, a longtime family friend, runs the event. Having played alongside Irwin in high school, Bambrick eagerly gives back to young athletes. “I was taught by volunteers and former athletes, so now it’s my turn to guide the next generation,” he says. His goal is to instill fundamental skills while fostering a love for the sport.
Beyond sports and teaching, Bambrick is also an author. His science fiction novel—a “snowy Odyssey,” as he describes it—draws from his life experiences, dreams, and historical knowledge. Writing the book took four years, with breaks for college and sports. COVID gave him the time to finally complete it, though the publishing process proved challenging. “I was humbled by how many publishers wouldn’t even read my work, so I had to self-publish,” he shares. Despite the setbacks, his book now has a 4.7 rating and is stocked at Barnes & Noble. “The idea that people are spending money to read something I wrote is unfathomable,” he says.
Bambrick’s contributions extend into the community. His work with the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project highlights his dedication to preserving history and supporting veterans. Whether volunteering for events at Hart High School or mentoring students, he believes in making a positive impact wherever possible.
Recognized not just as an athlete, but as a mentor and author, Bambrick remains grounded. “At the end of the day, I just want to help as much as I can and whomever I can,” he says. His message to young athletes and students is clear: “Give your best effort in everything you do. Have fun but understand that the path to greatness isn’t always fun. Be kind, be respectful, and be a positive influence.”
Looking ahead, Bambrick has no plans to slow down. His immediate focus is succeeding in Sweden’s professional football scene, followed by obtaining his teaching credential and potentially coaching. His writing journey continues as well, with a second book in the works.
Whether on the field, in the classroom, or through the pages of his books, Thomas Bambrick embodies dedication and resilience, proving that success comes in many forms—so long as you’re willing to put in the work
