Unearth a Story: A Prehistoric Summer of Reading Awaits
This summer, the Santa Clarita Public Library is inviting the community to step back in time (way back) to a world of discovery, imagination and adventure. From Monday, June 8, through Friday, July 24, readers of all ages can take part in the annual Summer Reading Program, themed “Unearth a Story.” Inspired by a prehistoric era before humans, this year’s program encourages participants to dig into great books, uncover new ideas and explore stories waiting to be discovered.
Designed to keep minds active while school is out, the Summer Reading Program blends education with entertainment through a wide variety of activities, events and incentives. Each Library Branch will transform into a destination for creativity, offering hands-on experiences that bring the prehistoric theme to life. From interactive crafts to engaging science-based programs, there is something for everyone, whether you are a young reader just starting out or a lifelong learner looking for your next great read.
The Summer Reading Program will officially kick off on Saturday, June 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Old Town Newhall Library Branch (24500 Main Street). This free event will introduce the “Unearth a Story” theme with engaging activities, opportunities to learn about the program and everything needed to get started on a summer filled with reading and discovery. It’s the perfect way for families to jump in and begin their journey.
Participants can join the Summer Reading Challenge by logging their reading days online at SantaClaritaReads.com. The goal is simple: read every day. Whether it’s a few pages before bed, multiple chapters throughout the day or an audiobook on your drive, each reading session brings participants closer to earning prizes. Readers can look forward to collecting books and other rewards throughout the summer, making reading both fun and motivating.
In addition to reading, the Library is offering a robust lineup of themed programming that encourages exploration and creativity. Families can enjoy “Check it OUT-Side,” a series of outdoor events held at City parks every Tuesday from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. These gatherings bring the Summer Reading experience beyond the Library walls, combining storytelling and activities with the fresh air of Santa Clarita’s parks.
Dinosaur-themed programs will also take center stage this summer, adding an extra layer of excitement for young participants. Kids can get hands-on with activities like creating fizzy dinosaur eggs or making edible “dirt,” while teens can dive deeper into science with a Dino Egg Lab. These programs are designed to spark curiosity and make learning interactive, helping participants connect with the theme in memorable ways. A full list of programs and descriptions can be found at SantaClarita.LibraryCalendar.com.
Returning again this year is the popular Lunch at the Library program, available at the Old Town Newhall Library Branch (24500 Main Street) and Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy Library Branch (18601 Soledad Canyon Road). Youth ages 18 and under can receive free, healthy lunches Monday through Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., beginning June 8 through July 24. This program is made possible through a partnership with School Day Café and the USDA Summer Food Service Program, ensuring that local youth have access to nutritious meals while school is out.
With its combination of reading challenges, interactive programs and community-focused services, the Santa Clarita Public Library’s Summer Reading Program offers more than just books; it provides an opportunity to connect, learn and grow. Whether you’re uncovering a new favorite story or participating in a hands-on activity, this summer is all about exploration.
