What’s New? Santa Clarita’s Outdoor Spaces
With 38 parks and counting, Santa Clarita is committed to expanding our open spaces and recreational opportunities that support physical and mental well-being. Studies show that spending more time outdoors—whether through exercise, relaxation or social connection—can help reduce stress and boost overall health. In Santa Clarita, residents can stay active by exploring a new park, hitting the trails or participating in our fun and free Community Hike program.
One of the most popular outdoor fitness spots is the 172-step exercise staircase at Central Park. This communal space has become a favorite for those looking to get their hearts pumping, make it to the top to enjoy beautiful views or meet with friends to walk the surrounding trails. If you’ve visited Central Park recently, you may have noticed an exciting new project in the plaza.
The River of Lights is a permanent installation that will feature hundreds of LED lights embedded in the walkway and winding up the mountain beside the staircase, creating a visually stunning, illuminated path. At the heart of the plaza is When a Cloud Met a Cloud, a 14-foot-tall public art piece by artist Sujin Lim. This immersive sculpture with white clouds and colorful “rain” columns features blinking lights that mimic rainfall, creating a sensory experience for visitors. The plaza will also include educational displays about Santa Clarita’s history with SCV Water and the City’s ongoing water conservation efforts. The River of Lights is anticipated to open later this spring, offering residents another reason to enjoy the outdoors.
Across town in Newhall, the City has been working closely with Los Angeles County Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger to transfer ownership of William S. Hart Park. This historic site is the last County-owned park within City boundaries. This nearly 160-acre park provides a myriad of opportunities to not only be outside and active but also to learn about our City’s rich Western history. Throughout the site, multiple hiking trails branch out into the open space, with beautiful views of the community and surrounding mountains, and don’t forget about the bison too! This is also a perfect place to have a picnic on the expansive green grass under the towering grove of sycamore trees. The City anticipates the transfer of ownership to take place this summer.
With so many parks, trails and outdoor amenities, Santa Clarita is a wonderful place to explore with friends and family. Whether you’re challenging yourself on the Central Park staircase, checking out the upcoming River of Lights Project or exploring the scenic landscapes and rich history at William S. Hart Park, there’s no shortage of ways to stay active and connect with nature. For more information please visit SantaClarita.gov.
