| Twenty-eight year old Valencia resident, Sarah Wilson certainly has the entrepreneurial spirit. After tirelessly asking guests to remove their shoes prior to entering her home, Sarah had an idea…to create a reusable shoe cover allowing guests to keep their shoes on while keeping her home clean. “Growing up, we were not allowed to wear shoes in our home in order to keep the carpets clean,” states Sarah. “When I became an adult with my own home I maintained the same rule. I didn’t want my friends who came over getting the carpets dirty by trekking in whatever was on the bottom of their shoes, so I would always ask them to remove them. I also didn’t like when the cable guy or maintenance workers would come in my home with their dirty work boots. Asking people to remove their shoes often made them (as well as myself) uncomfortable but I wouldn’t budge on it.” In 2010, Sarah embarked on the journey of creating a product that would cover a shoe easily, yet be washable and re-useable. “I researched online how and where to get help with an idea/small business. I found the SBDC right here at College of the Canyons and met with an advisor. My advisor Gil Murphy met with me once a week for the first few months to assist me in everything from my business plan to finding a factory to make the product. His help and time was a major contributing factor to where I am today with my company. The SBDC program is all-free and is dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground. It’s really an extraordinary program,” states Sarah. After about a year, Guest Galoshes™ was created, keeping carpets and flooring clean, un-scuffed while keeping germs and allergens out of the home. Guest Galoshes™ work great for guests, workmen and anyone else entering your home. They are available in children and adult sizes. You can purchase Guest Galoshes™ on Sarah’s website and they will hopefully be in stores soon. “If you have an idea, no matter how big or small, go for it,” states Sarah. “Don’t ever think it’s too hard or worry you don’t have the time or the funds. There are plenty of resources out there and people dedicated to donating their time and knowledge if you believe in yourself and your business. The Small Business Development Center of Santa Clarita is an amazing place that can really help you, if you are willing to put the time and energy in.” The biggest piece of advice Sarah can give a potential entrepreneur is — “You have got to have follow through, be determined and never give up. There are going to be times when people are going to turn your ideas down, times when you feel over your head, times when you lose focus and want to just call it quits, but you can’t. You can never give up. Dreams don’t just come true, you have to roll up your sleeves and say, ‘This is what I want and I am going to make it happen.’” For more information or to purchase Guest Galoshes™ visit the website at www.GuestGaloshes.com. |
