On February 3, 2011, stuntwoman Lisa Hoyle was in an accident at work that nearly cost her, her life.  With an open skull fracture and traumatic brain injury, she had a Glasgow Coma Score of 1…meaning she had zero eye response, zero verbal response and zero movement.  She was, as Lisa stated, “next to dead.” She has no recollection of the accident.
Lisa was rushed to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.  Dr. Singh was the stabilizing physician who helped Lisa.  “I don’t remember much, but I was in a coma and after a day, they induced me another five days,” states Lisa.  “I am so thankful for physicians like Dr. Singh and for the staff at Henry Mayo, they truly saved my life.”
“It is very rewarding and I feel very proud to be a member of a great team that took care of Lisa,” states Dr. Singh.  “It is an attestation that immediate access to a trauma center is very essential not only to the residents of this community, but also for those that work in and travel through this area.”
Dr. Singh came to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in December of 1990, and has been the Trauma Medical Director for more than 10 years.  During his time with the hospital, the Trauma system has evolved significantly.  “I have always wanted to be a surgeon. During my residency, I was exposed to a large number of trauma cases, which were very challenging yet rewarding. That molded my interest towards Trauma Surgery in addition to being a General Surgeon,” states Dr. Singh.  “I am so proud to be a part the growth of the Trauma System at Henry Mayo.”
An injury caused by external forces, trauma is documented as the leading cause of death and disability for people under the age of 45. “Due to the hospital’s proximity to two major Interstate Highways, Henry Mayo has always been impacted by trauma,” states Dr. Singh. “Henry Mayo is responsible for treating injured patients for a large area, not only in Santa Clarita but the majority of the North Los Angeles County. It may even extend to Ventura County to the west and Kern County to the north. Travel times from Henry Mayo to the next closest Trauma Centers south of the hospital often exceed 30 minutes due to the community’s increasing population and related traffic in North Los Angeles County.”
Dr. Singh continues, “For the severely injured patients, time is of the essence. The first hour after the injury, also known as the ‘Golden hour’, is critical. The patients require a quick assessment and intervention as necessary to ensure the best possible outcome. A delay in trauma care increases the likelihood of mortality, and because we have a Trauma Center right here in Santa Clarita, lives are saved because we can provide the highest and most comprehensive level of care and support to the critically injured patients.”
“My recovery has been miraculous,” states Lisa.  “I am back at work as a stuntwoman and while I lost my sense of smell and taste, I am so thankful to be alive.”
