Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Services for Life Keep SCV Healthy 10 Years of Wound Care Services
Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital’s commitment to the good health of the Santa Clarita Valley community includes a variety of Services for Life, among them, Wound Care Services, which the hospital has been providing since 2003.
Henry Mayo’s Wound Care Services this year is celebrating 10 years of serving the Santa Clarita Valley Community and beyond. With about 80 percent of patients coming from the SCV, Henry Mayo’s Wound Care Center (one of several outpatient services offered at the hospital) maintains consistently high patient satisfaction scores by providing excellent patient care.
The Wound Care Center serves 50 to 60 patients each week for chronic and acute wounds including diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, venous stasis, vascular, ischemic, bites, burns and other wounds that resist healing. Positive patient outcomes include a 90 percent healing rate for patients who complete treatment here. Healing time ranges from four to six weeks, according to Sue Galvin, RN, CWCN, outpatient wound coordinator at the Wound Care Center.
“Our goal is to improve the patient’s quality of life through efficient healing, and limb salvage,” Galvin said. “We’ve saved a lot of limbs here and we maintain high standards for fast wound healing.”
In addition to healthcare staff specializing in advanced wound care, there are four physicians, including two podiatrists, a family practitioner and an infectious disease doctor, who see patients at the Wound Care Center five days a week.
Staff also provides patients with emotional support and educational materials which helps them better understand their condition and treatment. Education includes hand hygiene, infection control, and proper nutrition guidelines to encourage speedy healing.
“We see many of our patients once a week and develop a close relationship with them,” Galvin said. “Eighty percent of the patients receiving treatments at the Wound Care Center are healed within 12 weeks.
Each patient gets a comprehensive evaluation and individualized care plans, addressing conditions that contribute to the injuries and may prevent healing.
“Every patient’s care is different,” Galvin said. “We find out what caused it, do what we can to correct it and get them healed faster. As a nurse, it’s very gratifying to see patients heal.”
The Wound Care Center works with referring physicians, self-referrals and other health agencies. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 661-253-8458. |
