Nestled against the hills of the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy is the Rivendale parcel, the site of a formal equestrian center and purchased by the City to block an anticipated landfill in Towsley Canyon. Each weekend, hundreds of hikers, runners, bicyclists, families and nature enthusiasts transverse the dusty road and parking lot into the hills to soak in the sights and sounds of the park.
This summer, there will be a different mix of sights and sounds for families to soak in at the park.
Get ready for a wonderful summer at LA SummerFest. Now in its fifth year, the eclectic cultural festival promises to be the best thus far. Of course, there will be the free Shakespeare in the Park series, a performance of the SCV Concert Band, and a show stopping musical. But this year, there are four new events for the growing festival.
July is an exciting month for the SummerFest at Rivendale, opening the festival one week earlier this year with a new event: The American FolkFest with great acoustic, folk and blue grass music, food trucks and activities for the kids. The event will be on July 5, from noon until 8:30 p.m., and there will be some outstanding local and regional groups including Modal Tease String Band. This concert is sponsored in part by Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, and promises to be fun for the entire family. This year is made possible from a grant for the Los Angeles Arts Commission. Admission is free and food and beer will be available at the site. This event is presented in cooperation with the SCV Blues Society as a fundraiser to send local a local SCV blues band to the national festival.
In August, there will be two new events: A Night at the Opera and Praise: Music of Faith, Love, and Grace. A Night at the Opera promises to be a beautiful evening of classic opera and light opera, with an exploration of opera in our everyday lives, with classically trained signers, live musicians, and a chorus of children, and maybe even some Marx Brothers! Bring a blanket and a picnic and enjoy. This is presented in cooperation with Eldorado Opera and Once Upon an Opera and will be held on Friday, August 8, at 8 p.m. This free concert is a perfect way to spend the evening with the entire family.
Come celebrate on August 1 at 8 p.m. for Praise: Music of Faith, Love, and Grace, another free family event with music focusing on Faith, Love, and Grace. Presenting wonderfully talented local musicians and partnering with community-based churches, this evening under the stars promises to be inspiring. Just a day later, come join the community and get your blues on for a full day of music, kid friendly activities and food trucks for the Celebration of International BLUES Day, which will be held on Saturday August 2, beginning at noon.
