BE THE CHANGE – Be the Influence
Everyone uses social media, but how many of us use it to make a positive change within our community? Social media reaches all around the world, offering an opportunity for users to get connected with like-minded people and spread their ideas. Santa Clarita residents have also taken to social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to bring their ideas to life.
Stylin’ Mama
Santa Clarita mom Collette Wixom uses Instagram to post photos of her two sons, but this is not your average family photo. Collette saw photos of young kids dressed to the nines, but everything was incredibly expensive. Her light-bulb moment? Use the photos she saw online and replicate it in an inexpensive way.
Since launching what started as a small project, Collette’s sons have become little models in the making, taking cameo photos in stylish threads from Doc Martens to ripped jeans; these kids have got style. As Collette built up a wealth of stylish content on her Instagram account, @ministylehacker, however, she didn’t expect much. And then one post made the difference. She paired her son’s knock-off outfit with the original, expensive one in an adorable side-by-side shot, and within a day, her account gained thousands of followers.

Advocate for the Voiceless
Local high school graduate Daniella Fenelon started a 100-day photo campaign on October 15, 2014 after learning 276 Nigerian girls were kidnapped from their boarding school. The campaign’s goal and message is “to combat the way women are silenced every day.” Their definition of silence is broad, from domestic violence to social standards.
Each day Fenelon posted a photo of a young girl or group of girls with a large red “x” across their mouths. The amount of people who participated in the campaign was staggering, with girls all across the city getting involved. Her use of Blogspot and Facebook helped get her message across to thousands of people. With such a strong response, Daniella has succeeded in starting and continuing a meaningful conversation with women and girls all over the world.
