Less than 40 miles from Santa Clarita, Oxnard is a world apart with its relaxed feel and myriad of things to see and do. If you are looking to escape for a few days or for a long weekend, this seaside destination is a great choice. For a beachside experience, the Embassy Suites by Hilton Mandalay Beach Resort is a perfect way to start that well deserved break. Driving into the resort, you can sense the peacefulness of this unique property with its oceanfront setting sprawled over 12 acres. White sandy beaches surround the resort with tumbling sand dunes and swaying palm trees. On clear days, you can see the Channel Islands located just 11 miles offshore. Whether you opt for an oceanfront suite or garden setting, each has lovely views. Amenities include a freeform heated pool, two large spas, tennis courts, cascading waterfalls and lush gardens. Channel Islands Harbor offers all types of outdoor activities. Island Packers provides regular excursions year-round to visit these pristine, primitive islands where you can kayak, hike, scuba dive or simply take in the windy bluffs, wide vistas and secret coves. While at the marina, visit the Channel Islands Maritime Museum, a treasure chest of maritime art with original paintings dating back to the 1700’s. It’s fun to roam through the exhibitions including the ‘Ships in a Bottle’, the “Marple Ship Models” from local builder, Edward Marple and “Prisoner of War Bone Models”, just to name a few. Special exhibits are displayed throughout the year in addition to special events such as the popular Chowderfest held in July. Take a trip back in time in Downtown Oxnard by stopping at Heritage Square, which contains turn-of-the-century original farmhouses saved from demolition from the Oxnard Plain. You can learn about Oxnard’s early beginnings on tours provided on the weekends. Heritage Square also hosts a couple of yearly events including the Victorian Christmas Tours in December and the Summer Concert Series, June through August. The Carnegie Art Museum in downtown showcases a vast collection of California artwork and is a former Andrew Carnegie Library. Other downtown highlights include the Oxnard Historic District, ten city blocks of early Craftsman, Spanish Colonial and Period Revival bungalows. If you love cars, The Murphy Auto Museum is open on the weekends, and the Mullin Automotive Museum opens on select Saturdays. Great shopping and dining can be found at the Collection at Riverpark which houses the Annex, a public market offering a mix of microshops, artisan boutiques, plus craft food and beverage purveyors. For laughs, Levity Live Comedy Club, located across from the Annex features many well-known comedians. Golf enthusiasts might want to take a swing at the River Ridge Golf Club offering beautiful views and a challenging course.
