Bringing Joy to the Soul with Griffin Loch

At only 14-years-old, Santa Clarita resident Griffin Loch has already written, produced, directed and edited one feature length film with another one on the way. The 8th grader from SCVi Charter School has an endless amount of creativity with the determination to match. He’s already figured out that if you love what you do, there’s no limit to what you can accomplish.
Like many cinematographic greats before him, Loch knew at a young age that he was meant to make movies. “From the day I was born, it’s just what I’ve been destined to do. When I was five, my parents went on a trip, and I was with my grandma. She let me watch Jaws. (even though my parents said no) From that moment, I already knew I need to do this for the rest of my life.”
Loch wrote his first movie, Calling the Shots, at 12 and shot it when he was just 13. The action- adventure, filmed in Santa Clarita, centers around a kid who sees a murder between a bank robber and a cop and finds himself embroiled in chaos afterwards. “With Calling the Shots, it was really done to see if it was possible. I’ve learned so much with filming and editing, with myself, finding style, and things that I like and dislike. It’s been a whole journey, and it’s really amazing to be able to have the resources to actually do it.”
And it’s his teachers at SCVi and family, especially his father who edits reality television and his mother who does production design, who he credits for giving him the opportunity to do what he loves. “What I’ve done wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for my parents and school putting all the effort they do into making the projects. There’s been times where my mom and dad have taken hours, even when they’re exhausted, just to help me finish and get the shot. It’s amazing that I have this kind of support. Sometimes I feel that I can’t show them as much gratitude as I want to. My grandpa drove ten hours from Northern California just to do a supporting role. To have that kind of support from my community is amazing, the SCV permit office has helped me so much and I appreciate everyone’s amazing support.”
Loch’s most recent film, The Adventure of TP Man and Flusher, starring Adam Simpson, Sam Grossinger, and Abby Stevens with a supporting cast of Eric Mickelson, Benjamin Snow and Blake Boarders is already in production. “With this film, I have more quirky characters to watch along with social issues that affect teens in this film. There’s a lot of layers, and it’s an entertaining story that I think will be really interesting to watch.”
Loch’s ultimate goal is to continue following his passion and growing as a filmmaker. “I’m willing to do the hard work because it’s what I love. It’s amazing to do something that you love. There have been times when I feel sick or tired. Once I get to set and I’m filming and seeing all the actors, I don’t feel that anymore because there’s just so much joy in my soul.”
