We color and curl, we pluck and we wax. We run and we squat, we crunch and we sweat. Whether we want our stomachs more flat or our legs more tone, our eyes less droopy and our face a little less wrinkly, we are always seeking to achieve beauty. As life goes by and we age, sometimes achieving that goal is more difficult, and when women reach a certain age, some believe it’s over.
But Santa Clarita resident and celebrity makeup artist, Sally Van Swearingen, is here to tell you…It’s not over yet!
Her new book, It’s Not Over Yet, Reclaiming your Real Beauty Power in Your 40’s, 50’s and Beyond, was recently published and is already a success with women. Voted one of the best make-up artists in the country by Allure Magazine, Sally takes a moment to talk with us about her new book and how you can bring out your inner/outer hottie at any age.
Sally combines her 25-year experience in the beauty industry along with personal lessons she has learned along the way to create her new book It’s Not Over Yet. “I wrote the book because many women get caught in a trap that when they reach a certain age, they let go of their beauty and never completely come back to the ‘glamazon’ woman they once were,” states Sally. “Women tend to give up and they don’t realize they are doing it. I had one of those ‘aha’ moments that brought me back to reality that I too, had turned into that woman.”
In her book, Sally describes why ladies beyond 40 tend to go in one of three directions, from the sweatpants and baseball cap wearing women who have given up on beauty power, to the daisy dukes and Ugg boots gals competing with younger women, to the “I love my beauty power” attitude that is done in a sexy yet appropriate way. “We have to remember that we are role models, and we can still look playful, current, and still look sexy, but we have to take the time to put ourselves together. We should always be striving to be the best we can be, and my book gives 36 different ways you can reclaim that beauty power.” For example, Sally suggests that women over 40 should lose the foundation. “A lot of women use heavy foundation to achieve one skin color, but after 40, our skin cannot handle that. If you are going to wear foundation, limit the foundation to a tinted primer, like Studio Essentials Amazing Tinted Primer. Tinted primer gives a kiss of coverage while adding a subtle luminous glow.”
The book is about embracing yourself, reclaiming your beauty, and not giving up, because it’s not over. “We reach the point in our mid 40’s and 50’s and think it’s over, but it’s not. This is the time we should be passionate about spending the last few decades being able to do the things we can still do.”
Sally is a makeup and hairstylist and owner of the A List Hair and Makeup Studio in Newhall. Her experience and professionalism has made her a highly sought after makeup artist. Sally has also created her own line of makeup and also offers makeup classes for those trying to recreate the salon look.
