There was no shortage of creative opportunities for Dody Rogers while growing up. In fact, it was at a young age that the Santa Clarita resident and artist discovered her love for art.
“My father was an artist,” states Dody. “He worked at Walt Disney Studios and because of it, I was always surrounded by incredible artists.”
Dody’s love for the arts carried into high school and college, taking art classes to further hone her skills. She graduated with a teaching credential from the University of Redlands and taught the first grade, passing her love for art onto her students. “The students did incredible art projects to decorate our room for all yearly events.”
After the birth of her son, Dody quit teaching and opened up an art gallery and gift shop in Sherman Oaks. For a decade, she created art accessories for children’s rooms, murals and decorative items for the home. In 1976, the artist made another career change, spending the following 34 years in real estate. It was at that time that she made her way to the SCV.
“I didn’t do any art while I was selling real estate other than design and photography to promote the properties I was representing,” states Dody. It wasn’t until she retired just about four years ago when Dody returned to her passion for the arts. “I was reacquainted with my art through photography and taking nice trips with my husband. I wanted to try some oil painting, so my photographs inspire me to recreate them with oils.” Many of Dody’s original photographs were taken in the Eastern Sierra, where she shared a home with her husband for 40 years.
Dody has since displayed her art with the Santa Clarita Artists Association, an organization she is proud to be a part of. “I love being involved with the Santa Clarita Artist Association. The people are so friendly and encouraging and I love their enthusiasm.” Dody chairs two of the Santa Clarita Artists Association’s major fundraising events, one being the Art Festival at Le Chene in the spring and the Art Classic Gala, which will be held on October 18, 2014 at Hart Hall at William S. Hart Park. “The Santa Clarita Artists Association is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year,” states Dody. “It will be celebrated in a special way. Proceeds from the gala go to the Sponsor Scholarship Program where we give out three scholarships to promising art students.”
“I love what I do and enjoy sharing my artwork with others.”
