Full-Day Arts Symposium – Growing Your Artist Self to New Heights

Whether you’re an artist who works with a paintbrush, on stage or on a laptop, finding inspiration can be challenging but exciting. However, the path to building a career around your passion can feel daunting and overwhelming. In celebration of October being National Arts and Humanities Month, the City of Santa Clarita will be hosting its first-ever Arts Symposium on Sunday, October 20, offering free workshops and panel discussions focused on the artist looking to build his or her career.
The free Arts Symposium is part of the annual New Heights Artist Development Series. Artists of all skill levels and experiences are encouraged to attend the day-long, educational conference which will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at The Centre, located at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway.
Opening remarks and keynote addresses will begin at 9 a.m., but be sure to arrive early for a free Continental breakfast, beginning at 8 a.m. The Symposium will present three focused panel groups, for a total of nine sessions, in an array of topics from the cinematic, musical and visual arts.
Visual artists can attend panels with working artist-speakers on how to create a compelling portfolio, how to get up to speed on social media from the artist’s perspective and how to price your work in the art market.
For filmmakers, find out how to enter your film into a festival, learn about “Top Marketing Tips for Indie Filmmakers” and get advice from a panel of seasoned filmmakers on what happens after production, in the “You Have Made A Film; Now What?” session.
For musicians, attend a panel on “How to Get Booked: Booking Agents 101,” meet professional music supervisors to find out what they do and what they’re looking for, and explore the ins and outs of touring.
Additional presentations for all audiences will include speaker Scott Rubenstein, who is a 30-year tax expert, giving the basics on “Taxes and the Artist.” Rubenstein is co-owner of L.A. Tax Service, specializing in self-employed tax returns and the entertainment business, and has been featured on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
The Arts Symposium is just one example of many learning opportunities available for artists offered by the City of Santa Clarita and Santa Clarita Arts Commission. In addition to the one-day Arts Symposium, the City offers their New Heights program which presents free workshops, panel discussions and lectures designed specifically to engage creative individuals, no matter what level of experience. Sessions help artists and performers expand their knowledge, while learning valuable tools to advance not just their creative work but their career success.
