Gary Horton Giving Back to Those in Need
Gary Horton has played an instrumental role in developing and running, not one, but three successful businesses and has been giving back to the community for the past several years. Foremost of his businesses is Landscape Development Incorporated, one of the United State’s leading landscape industry firms. “We employ about 1100 people in California and Nevada, with a heavy concentration of commercial landscape maintenance in Los Angeles and Ventura”. Since its inception 35 years ago, this company has grown to become a top three overall leader in California and either number one or two in landscape maintenance in our local area here in LA / Ventura. We are active in constructing landscapes for local developments and help maintain some of the larger HOAs in the Santa Clarita Valley. And beyond landscaping, Gary has branched out with two more businesses: All Locked Up Self Storage in Castaic and an avocado and citrus farm in Piru.
For the past 32 years Gary has been heavily involved in giving back to our community that has given so much to him. Over the years, the Horton family needed Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in various aspects of their lives and it was only befitting to answer the call to action when Henry Mayo wanted to expand the trauma center and emergency room. As a large corporate donor, Landscape Development Inc. has earned their place amongst the other philanthropic partners on the marble donor wall in Henry Mayo’s lobby. “This is one of the single most important infrastructures and we were happy to do so because the hospital has always been there for us”.
Gary continues his philanthropic spirit with Bridge to Home. “Most people know that Bridge to Home is one of Santa Clarita’s best efforts for helping the homeless community.” This non-profit has grown from a seasonal to a year-long operation with the help of the City. Over the years, Landscape Development Inc. provided the shuttle van clients use to get to appointments, engagements, etc. “We are proud to support this organization and are just happy we can do our part”. Lastly, Gary and his team have been working with the Gary Sinise Foundation. This foundation reaches out to disabled veterans that were profoundly wounded and homes that are more functional for their disabilities. “The vet can have full mobility and carry out an almost normal life as can be imagined in the new fully, custom home.” Recently, Landscape Development Inc. donated the design and construction for two full landscapes for custom homes for permanently wounded veterans. The most recent, the Brubaker residence was a huge success. This was a project to honor the sacrifice of the U.S.M.C. CPL Joshua Brubaker. His sacrifice was made on the behalf of his country, but is also one that his family will continue to live with for the rest of his life. CPL Brubaker was victim to an IED while serving his country in Afghanistan losing both of his legs to the blast. Landscape Development’s part in this project was to install over 8,000 square feet of sod, 32 trees of mixed species, and over 200 low water use shrubs, and fully automated irrigation for all of it. All selections made with the future park-like setting in mind, that was exactly what the Brubaker family wanted.
When not working or working with non-profits, Gary enjoys life with Carrie, his wife of 39 years, visiting their three grown kids in Seattle and Ventura, hanging with the grandkids and engaging in their primary hobby, boating in the Channel Islands.
